Did You Know...

... that the Fun Flag has been missing since August 2023?

British team Eclipse with the Fun Flag in 2015
posted Jul 20th, 2026 - The Fun Flag used to be a significant and cherished part of major Formation Skydiving competitions, including FAI World Championships and World Cups. The history of the Fun Flag and its purpose were summarized by the NSL News on 28 September 2006.

The last sighting of the Fun Flag was covered by the NSL News during the FAI Outdoor World Cup 2023 at Skydive Voss in Norway. Nephtys member Elise Poindron had placed the Fun Flag in a very special location, with the assistance of other members of the French delegation.

That was almost three years ago, and the Fun Flag has not been seen at any major event since then. The FAI Outdoor World Championship 2024 was probably the first outdoor world championship where the Fun Flag was absent throughout the entire event, and the situation remained unchanged at the FAI Outdoor World Cup 2025. Its absence has taken away an important part of these championships, and hopefully the current keeper is simply waiting for the right opportunity to return the Fun Flag to the skydiving community and its major events.

The busiest event in the history of the Fun Flag was probably the FAI Dubai Mondial 2012, where it changed hands almost daily. Each temporary owner knew and respected the unwritten rules, which require the Fun Flag to be displayed prominently for competitors and spectators alike at all times.

Capturing the Fun Flag at the event site and then keeping it out of sight is considered a violation of those unwritten rules. The final owner after the award ceremony traditionally takes it home, with the understanding that it will reappear and fly again at the next major event. The absence of the Fun Flag since 2023, including the first outdoor world championship without it, can only be remedied by bringing it back into the open and letting it fly again this year in Eloy.

Arizona Airspeed brought the Fun Flag to Dubai in 2012, and by the end of the event it had found its way into British and Canadian hands. Katie Woods, who would later become a member of the Canadian team Evolution at the FAI Outdoor World Championship 2014, carried the Fun Flag in her luggage and successfully brought it to Great Britain, where it was flying again at the World Challenge 2013. During the Dubai Mondial, the Fun Flag was also in the possession of the Irish 4-way Open team Fast Air and the Danish Vivas 4-way Women team.
