Did You Know...

... that the A Class leaderboard featured teams from four countries last weekend?

A Class winner Encore Une Fois at the Tomscat Trophy
posted Jul 9th, 2019 - The A Class leaderboard won by participation last weekend. The total of 12 teams was one higher than the number of AAA Class teams. It was also the only one of the four leaderboards that featured teams from four different countries who posted their scores after using the same synchronized competition draw.

The Top 3 positions were taken by teams from three different countries (Netherlands - Great Britain - Belgium), and the 3rd place was strongly contested. Two more Dutch teams placed behind High Voltage from Belgium in 3rd place and ahead of the only Czech A Class team, High Five. The rankings of the adjusted leaderboard are according to the total after Round 6, which was completed at all meet locations.

It was the first outdoor competition in the A Class for the Czech team that the NSL News had introduced during the ESL Championship 2018 with a live interview in Saarlouis. High Five had won the Rookie Class gold medals and announced plans with a different lineup in the A Class this year.

High Five started in the A Class at the monthly meets of the Czech Tunnel League and attended four indoor meets between November and February. Then it was time for the first outdoor competition last weekend.

Encore Une Fois - High Voltage - High Five at last weekend's events
Volt4ge at a UKSL meet in 2018
High Voltage from Belgium had to fend off two Dutch teams (Funky Falcon - Luctor et Decensus) at the Tomscat Trophy to claim the 3rd place on the A Class leaderboard. It was still a very tight 1-point situation after Round 6, and the scores of the last four rounds eventually extended the final difference to four points.

The British Volt4ge outscored the Belgian High Voltage for the 2nd place. It's the second year for Volt4ge in the A Class, and it was the team's 3rd time at the 2019 meets of the UK Skydiving League. Volt4ge have attended each UKSL meet since the team was founded at the beginning of the 2018 outdoor season.

The UK Nationals 2019 are next at the end of August, and Volt4ge could be in contention for A Class medals. The scores of last year's national championships are showing that Volt4ge is currently above the bronze medal level, and the silver medals are in reach, as well.

There is a new mix of British A Class teams this year. Only Volt4ge and Area 51 have been back in the same category. The RAFSPA Tornado lineup attended both earlier meets this year, as well, and Volt4ge has the upper hand so far.

High Voltage at the ISR Grand Prix 2018
A Class winner Encore Une Fois is a new Dutch team with no scoring records in the NSL database. Only team videographer Henk Bootsveld has a 4-way history. He was filming the Dutch AAA Class team Turbulence years ago.

The A Class was the most competitive category at last year's national championships in the Netherlands, and it could be the same this year.

However, Encore Une Fois have positioned themselves very strongly a few months before the competition. The 10.2 average at the Tomscat Trophy would have won the gold medals last year.

The Funneling Four won with a 9.0 average in 2018, and no other Dutch team was close to Encore Une Fois's 10.2 average last weekend.

Everything seems to be wide open in the Netherlands though. Last year's A Class winner at the Tomscat Trophy, Free Format, did not compete at the national championships. Vice versa, the A Class winner, The Funneling Four, had not attended the Tomscat Trophy before winning the national gold medals later...
