Did You Know...

... that Eliana Rodriguez is the only Formation Skydiving competitor with three gold medals in three different events?

40-point victory after Round 10: Golden Knights at the Mondial 2016
posted Dec 29th, 2016 - Yesterday's update from the Golden Knights headquarters was not only interesting due to the recent personnel changes, which brought 4-way Women world champion Jennifer Davidson into the new 8-way lineup.

The Golden Knights have won the gold medals at FAI World Championships of Formation Skydiving three consecutive times (2012 - 2014 - 2016) and have finalized their plans how to add the next set of 8-way gold medals to the collection.

The U.S. Army team has been dominating the world's 8-way competition in an unprecedented way since 2012, as the Sun Path Products NSL News reported on October 4th. The Golden Knights have not lost or tied a competition round since December 2012, and the 40-point distance to France in 2nd place this year was the third largest winning margin in the history of the sport. The Golden Knights had won by 45 points in Prostejov 2014, and only the legendary Golden Knights lineup of 1997 did even better and concluded the "Decade of Excellence" (1987 - 1997) with a 53-point victory (224 - 179) over Russia.

First gold medal in 4-way Women: Jen Davidson in 2016
Chances are little that the 8-way dominance of the Golden Knights will change any time soon. New member David Flynn has a 21.0 average in his records for a starting point after his first serious test at the USPA Nationals 2016, and new member Jennifer Davidson will surely not slow down the team.

The next World Championship of Formation Skydiving is still two years away, and nothing is impossible, as France and Russia have enough talent and experience to field a world class 8-way team. However, the Golden Knights have a head start that almost guarantees the next set of 8-way gold medals in 2018.

The expected 8-way gold medal would move Jen Davidson closer to a unique achievement in the modern history of Formation Skydiving competition since 1985. Only one single competitor has won world meet gold medals in three of the currently four categories.

First gold medal in 4-way Women: Eliana Rodriguez in 2001
As Jen Davidson did this year, Eliana Rodriguez won her first gold medal with Synchronicity in 4-way Women at the world meet in Empuriabrava 2001. Three years later, she added 8-way gold in Rijeka 2004 with Arizona Airspeed. Jen Davidson could copy this double gold a year sooner if the Golden Knights win the 8-way competition again in 2018.

Airspeed discontinued the 8-way efforts after the 2nd place in 2006 and focused on 4-way competition. Eliana Rodriguez was in the new Odyssey lineup and won her 4-way gold medal in Maubeuge 2008, seven years after her first gold medal in 4-way Women.

Jen Davidson will be right behind Eliana Rodriguez with Formation Skydiving accomplishments after winning the expected 8-way gold medal, as no other female FS competitor has won gold medals in two events so far. Adding the missing 4-way Open Class gold medal would eventually tie her with Eliana Rodriguez, which could happen as early as in 2020 and would be three years quicker. Jen Davidson continues casually in 4-way with the same lineup that won bronze medals at this year's USPA Nationals, while pursuing the next 8-way gold medals for the Golden Knights...
