Did You Know...

... that Florida ended up without USPA medals?

CitiZens at the USPA Nationals 2023
posted Oct 9th, 2026 - The AA/Intermediate Class competition at the USPA Nationals 2026 featured an interesting duel between two Florida teams: Relentless and Zhills Door BlockerZ. It was more than just an internal Florida rivalry, as both teams were competing for USPA medals. The two teams knew each other well. They trained at the same drop zone, Skydive City in Zephyrhills, and shared the same coach, Sally Hathaway. On paper, the two teams appeared to have an uneven starting point in the USPA Intermediate Class. Relentless had already won silver medals in the category the previous year and returned for the 2026 season with the same lineup.

Zhills Door BlockerZ were also USPA medal winners the previous year, although they had competed in the lower A/Beginner Class, where they matched Relentless's silver-medal achievement. John Bruce and Jason King remained with Zhills Door BlockerZ, while Fawn Fowler and Amaranth Aquarian replaced Jamie Hamilton and Reid Hanson. Casey Mongoven continued in the camera-flyer role.

With its previous experience, the team could have remained in the A/Beginner Class for another year and pursued USPA gold medals, even with the two new members, Fawn Fowler and Amaranth Aquarian. Fawn Fowler had already won gold in the A/Beginner Class with CitiZens (Brian Babernitch, Albert Etienne, Yekaterina Payeras, and Billy Colwell on camera) at the USPA Nationals 2023. Amaranth Aquarian was also a CitiZens member but missed the USPA Nationals that year due to an earlier injury. However, the newly formed Zhills team chose to move up to the AA/Intermediate Class for the competition in Perris.

The rivalry became even more interesting when it emerged that the Door BlockerZ's direct opponents, Relentless, also had two former CitiZens members in their lineup: Brian Babernitch and Albert Etienne. Former CitiZens teammates Fawn Fowler, Amaranth Aquarian, and Brian Babernitch went their separate ways after the USPA Nationals 2024, before returning to the competition scene with different teams. Brian Babernitch joined Relentless in 2025, while Fawn Fowler and Amaranth Aquarian became members of Door BlockerZ in 2026.

After CitiZens disbanded, Albert Etienne continued competing for another year alongside his two daughters, Hannah and Rebekah. The Etienne family won USPA silver medals with AirGo in the A/Beginner Class at the USPA Nationals 2024. Door BlockerZ's Jason King completed the family lineup that year.

In 2025, only Hannah and Albert Etienne continued with Relentless, joining forces with Flaviane Venditti and former CitiZens member Brian Babernitch. Training at Skydive City under Sally Hathaway's coaching, the team won silver medals in the AA/Intermediate Class the previous year, posting a 10.6-point average behind Spaceland Toxic.

The same lineup considered moving up to the AAA/Advanced Class but ultimately decided against it. Instead, Relentless returned to the AA/Intermediate Class, where the team naturally emerged as a leading contender for USPA gold medals in 2026. The team had not posted any scores at other outdoor competitions, leaving its performance at the Nationals as the main benchmark for the season.

- Relentless at the USPA Nationals 2025
4-way Intermediate Class awards at the USPA Nationals 2025
The Zhills Door BlockerZ had been just as absent from the 2026 scoring sheets as Relentless before both teams showed up at Skydive Perris last month. Coach Sally Hathaway likely knew that the two teams could find themselves competing directly against each other. Relentless, in particular, had to be considered a contender for USPA gold medals, having won silver in the same category the previous year.

However, both teams had surprises in store for their coach and the entire AA/Intermediate Class field. Spaceland Pajama Party lived up to expectations and finally claimed the USPA gold medals. Door BlockerZ delivered a particularly positive surprise, as the Zhills team had not been expected to emerge as a medal contender. They missed out on bronze only after an extra tie-breaking round against CSC Singularity, while setting a new team record average.

Relentless looked to be in excellent shape through Round 6, when they still held a two-point lead over eventual winners Spaceland Pajama Party, 63–61, and appeared to be living up to expectations. However, the Texas team responded with its two strongest rounds of the competition, turning the two-point deficit into a seven-point lead after the Super Sequence in Round 8. In the end, despite their strong performances and medal ambitions, both Florida teams finished outside the medal positions at Skydive Perris.
