The original VTSD lineup joined the National Skydiving League in 2009 as a collegiate team whose ambitions extended well beyond the university campus. Their progression soon became one of the clearest examples of the NSL development system in action, as the same core competitors advanced from collegiate champions to Intermediate and Advanced Class gold medalists before reaching the highest level of the sport. Doug Barron and Andrew Happick eventually claimed the USPA Open Class title with SDC Rhythm XP in 2019 and followed it with a second-place finish at the FAI Tanay Mondial 2021. Happick later added FAI World Championship gold medals with XP8 in Eloy 2022 and Crystal Coast 2024, while Barron continued his successful
career with SDC Rhythm XP.
Doug Barron (Outside Center), Andrew Happick (Point), Joey Coffineau (Inside Center) and Ben Worrall (Tail), with James Sides on camera, competed in nine 4-way events during the 2009 season. Five of those competitions were held in different regional leagues of the NSL 4-way Network (Virginia, Carolina, MidAtlantic), complemented by two indoor meets. By the time they arrived at the USPA Nationals 2009, they were thoroughly prepared and captured the AA/Intermediate Class gold medals with ease. They were equally dominant at the USPA Collegiates later that December, where they had no serious challenge on their way to another title.

The breakthrough 2009 season established the Virginia Tech team as one of the country's fastest-rising 4-way projects. Their commitment to regular competition and deliberate preparation before major events became a defining element of their approach. Unlike many successful collegiate teams, VTSD remained together after graduation. The same core group continued training, relocated its program to Skydive Carolina, and adopted the Carolina
Turbo XP identity.
The continuity produced immediate results. Without changing their competitive philosophy, the team captured the USPA Advanced Class title with the original lineup only one year after winning Intermediate gold—a progression achieved by only a select number of teams in U.S. competition history. However, the journey did not stop there. Carolina Turbo XP entered the 4-way Open Class and continued to improve against the nation's strongest teams. Personnel changes became a natural part of the team's evolution, yet the foundation created during the VTSD years remained intact. By the end of the 2015 season, the program had established itself as one of the leading Open Class contenders in the United States.

The VTSD story remains one of the National Skydiving League's strongest examples of long-term athlete development. A university team became a regional contender, a regional contender became a national champion, and two of its original members ultimately reached the highest levels of U.S. and international 4-way
competition. The progression represents the purpose of the NSL league system: creating a pathway that allows competitors to advance from their first league meets to the highest levels of formation skydiving.
Original VTSD member Doug Barron is now following a similar path to the one his teammate and close friend Andrew Happick took after their years together with SDC Rhythm XP. As the NSL News reported on January 21st, Doug Barron has joined Paraclete's XP8 lineup. Andrew Happick is no longer part of the 8-way roster, leaving Doug Barron with the opportunity to pursue an 8-way world title of his own. Paraclete XP8 enters the season as the expected top contender for the FAI outdoor gold medals in October. However, the lineup featuring Doug Barron has yet to compete together in an outdoor event, adding another intriguing chapter to the continuing evolution of one of the sport's most experienced competitors.
