Did You Know...

... that the German Trögele family may compete with a three-generation lineup this year?

posted Jun 29th, 2026 - The NSL News has covered numerous 4-way family stories over the years. They have ranged from world champions to junior competitors, featuring families such as David and Andy Grauwels, Mathieu and Guillaume Bernier, Martial and Marin Ferré, and Tom and Noe Mattoni. The Canadian Lemay family, with father Michel and his three sons—Benoit, Martin, and Vincent—in the Evolution lineup has long stood out as one of the sport's most remarkable family stories, even though the three brothers later won FAI world championship bronze medals in 4-way Open and 4-way VFS without their father at Prostejov 2014.

Despite those memorable examples, one family milestone has not yet been featured in NSL News. Brothers and sisters, fathers and sons, and mothers and daughters have trained and competed together in both 4-way and 8-way, but the family connection has never extended beyond two generations in the same competition lineup. That could change this year.

The Trögele family from Germany may become the first to field a three-generation team at a national championship. Robert Trögele, his son Andreas, and his grandson Julius have all appeared regularly in NSL News updates over the years as active 4-way and 8-way competitors. This season, however, Robert Trögele is pursuing a unique goal: bringing all three generations together in the same lineup at the German Outdoor National Championship. If successful, the Trögeles would add another remarkable chapter to the history of family participation in Formation Skydiving and create a milestone that has not yet been recorded in NSL News coverage.

Andreas Trögele (center) with Airbus 4-way in Eloy 2022
Robert Trögele enjoyed his most successful years in German Formation Skydiving more than four decades ago. His son, Andreas Trögele, later followed a different path in the sport, taking over the camera slot for Germany's top team EADS in 2012. He was filming team captain Thomas Mack, Operation Adler member Göran Meyer, and Christian Schäfer at the 2013 German National Championship, where EADS missed qualification for the next FAI World Championship by a single point.

Over the following years, Andreas Trögele established himself as Germany's most sought-after and experienced 4-way team videographer. His career culminated with Top 10 positions with the Airbus team at outdoor world championships, following years of double duty in both 4-way and 8-way..

After earning his first FAI medal for Germany, Andreas Trögele stepped away from camera flying. By then, he was already a father, and his son Julius had begun his own 4-way career in the talent factory established by his grandfather Robert Trögele at Skydive Paranodon in Illertissen. Julius Trögele started with one of the Paranodon Futura 4-way project teams, and the three Trögeles attended the same competition for the first time at the Paranodon Cup 2019. Andreas Trögele competed in his son's team for the first time, while grandfather Robert attended the same event with one of the many Paranodon Senior lineups.

Andreas and Julius Trögele with Paranodon Futura in 2019
Andreas Trögele remained with the Airbus teams through the 2022 season while gradually devoting more of his time to 4-way training with his son and the Paranodon Futura project teams. Grandfather Robert Trögele also stayed deeply involved in the sport. He continues to direct the Paranodon Futura 4-way project at his skydiving center in Illertissen and currently serves as Germany's national coach for Formation Skydiving. Shortly after the conclusion of the Paranodon Cup, he also claimed the SOS World Championship title this year with a Paranodon Senior lineup, as the NSL News reported on June 13th.

Today, Andreas and Julius Trögele compete together on Paranodon Futura 6.9, where the father-and-son combination advanced to the AAA Class level last season. During the NSL Live Talk from the SOS World Championship in Poland, Robert Trögele revealed his latest ambition: to complete a three-generation family lineup at this year's German Outdoor National Championship. To make it happen, Andreas and Julius Trögele would likely need the support of their Paranodon Futura 6.9 teammates and suitable substitutes for the event.

Neither a three-generation Trögele lineup nor Paranodon Senior or Paranodon Futura 6.9 is expected to challenge Airbus 4-way Illertissen for the national title this year. However, that is hardly the point. While Thomas Mack is preparing for the outdoor world championship alongside his own sons, Tim and Moritz, the Trögeles have an opportunity to achieve a different kind of milestone—one that would be unique in NSL News history and a memorable addition to the long tradition of family participation in Formation Skydiving.
