Did You Know...

... that Paranodon SOS transitioned quickly from AAA to A-Class competition?

Aethers and Golden Knights in DeLand the weekend after Weembi
posted Jun 13th, 2026 - Aethers and Golden Knights both accepted a challenging schedule when they committed to their next 4-way competition, the Shamrock Showdown 2026 - 1st Bob Hallett Memorial, immediately after completing ten indoor rounds at the FAI Indoor World Cup 2026. The teams traveled from France to Florida, where they transitioned from indoor to outdoor competition at Skydive DeLand.

Full-time teams and competitors are accustomed to challenging situations, whether on the logistical side or during a competition itself. However, it is relatively uncommon for recreational teams and competitors to commit to such a demanding schedule, especially when it involves consecutive outdoor competitions.

The challenge is significant for both professional and recreational competitors, but it requires even greater energy and commitment from athletes eligible for POPS (40+) and SOS (60+) events. Nearly the entire Paranodon SOS lineup had planned to compete on home turf in Illertissen last weekend before quickly traveling to Poland for the next edition of the POPS/SOS 4-way competition. Paranodon SOS was able to provide strong competition for the German national team in the 4-way Open event, Airbus 4-Way Illertissen, and had to settle for third place behind Tinder. However, they still outscored the Czech M Team on the AAA Class leaderboard.

Paranodon SOS at the Paranodon Cup 2026
Paranodon SOS in Illertissen
Fortunately, the logistical demands of two consecutive events and the associated travel schedule proved more challenging for Paranodon SOS than the five sequences they had to perform in Poland. A reduced version of the A-Class dive pool was used for the five rounds of the POPS/SOS competition, while the German team had just completed ten demanding AAA Class sequences at the Paranodon Cup. Compared to that experience, the A-Class sequences must have felt almost like a skydiving vacation.

POPS/SOS teams also benefit from additional working time, as the standard 35 seconds in FAI/ISC competition is extended to 45 seconds for the older generations. As a result, scores and averages are often higher. Paranodon SOS finished with an 8.1 average in AAA Class competition at Illertissen before posting a 14.8 average in Poland.

Paranodon SOS arrived in Poland with its original lineup. Fi4na member Jupp Kampmann was unavailable for the Paranodon Cup, where Beat Kattenrieder filled his slot. Trick and Treat videographer Wolfgang Hagedorn performed double duty at the Paranodon Cup before filming only five rounds for Paranodon SOS in Poland. He is expected to return to his 4-way Women team for the German Outdoor National Championships later this year, which may require the SOS lineup to find a different videographer.

Wolfgang Hagedorn with Focus Remscheid members in Gera 2006
Trick and Treat's team videographer, Wolfgang Hagedorn, is no stranger to 4-way Women competition. He filmed Focus Remscheid at the FAI Outdoor World Championship 2006, where the team finished fifth for Germany's delegation on home soil in Gera. Now, Trick and Treat are dreaming of earning their own opportunity to compete at an outdoor world championship.

Jan Rojek is a former German 4-way and 8-way champion. He achieved the rare double-gold at the 1988 German National Championships together with teammate Thomas Spielvogel. Robert Troegele was one of his main rivals, particularly in 8-way competition. Jupp Kampmann is still pursuing podium finishes in 4-way with his second team, Fi4na. In fact, he already claimed an outdoor bronze medal at last year's national outdoor championship. Uli Sehrbrock has also won multiple German 8-way titles and remains a member of Teiwaz.

SOS team founder and captain Robert Troegele has different plans for this year's national championship. He intends to compete with a family team spanning three generations, alongside his son Andreas and grandson Julius. Both are currently training and competing with Paranodon Futura 6.9, which won the AA Class competition at the Paranodon Cup.
