Did You Know...

... that R Class scores reached their highest levels of the season in April?

Random Formation F: Open Accordian
posted Jun 9th, 2026 - The R Class sequence of the Indoor Cloud League's April competition featured the easiest random formation in the dive pool, F (Open Accordion), for athletes taking their first steps in 4-way competition. The R Class is unique to Indoor Cloud League events and introduces all 16 random formations one by one, each paired with another random formation—the Star (M), the oldest formation in the history of the sport. The two player-coaches permitted under ICL rules are intended to provide a solid foundation for participants entering the wind tunnel with little or no experience in 4-way formations. Even though the R Class always combines the Star with just one other random formation, the difficulty of the sequences can still vary considerably.

Proper body position, level control, grip-taking skills, communication, and synchronization already present significant challenges for new 4-way competitors. Learning all 16 formations while sharing the chamber with three other participants and maintaining individual flying skills must be approached in manageable steps. For that reason, technically demanding block moves and piece-flying techniques are not part of the Rookie Class curriculum.

Even sequences consisting of only three or four random formations add a mental challenge to tasks that are already physically demanding. Successfully building a formation, communicating its completion, releasing all grips, and making a controlled transition to the next formation can be challenging enough when alternating between the Star and a single additional random formation.

Czech 4-way juniors of Grinch Team in April action
The starting formation in both Rookie Class categories (R and RR) is always the Star, while the second formation can be any one of the other 15 random formations. With only 12 monthly competitions each calendar year, the Indoor Cloud League uses the Rookie Class format to introduce these formations one at a time at the most basic level of 4-way competition.

Each of the 15 formations requires specific skills in all four slots, and the R Class sequences provide the ideal environment for participants to experience those requirements after completing their individual skills training. Once competitors have mastered the fundamentals, coaches and player-coaches help them learn the unique characteristics of each formation. The April sequence offered the highest scoring potential of any possible combination in this ICL category.

It was therefore no surprise that the scores of two participating teams reached the 25-point cap. Hillie Machness and Bryan Bradley actually completed 44 points during the 35 seconds of working time with their player-coaches, Lucas King and Michael Erickson, before ICL judge Kyle Hermberg deducted two points for rule infringements. The same lineup also reached the 25-point limit in the RR Class competition. One of the iFLY Tampa teams completed 43 points and likewise finished with the maximum score of 25 on the April leaderboard. The STF4 team at iFLY Atlanta did not perform the R Class sequence, while the Czech Grinch juniors finished just two points short of the maximum despite competing without player-coaches. The Yuan (D) formation in May and the Sidebody (P) in June present a significantly higher level of difficulty and are expected to bring scores back down to more typical levels.
