Did You Know...

... that Echochamber has already won FAI indoor bronze medals in 2018?

Italy's Sinapsi in 3rd place at the FAI World Cup 2009

posted Jul 27th, 2025 - The potential bronze medal position for Sweden's Echochamber on the FAI European Indoor Championship leaderboard at the FAI Outdoor World Cup 2025 is meaningful for many reasons, as the earlier NSL News update pointed out.

There is no FAI medal for the best unofficial amateur team behind the official medal positions and the contenders for the three sets of medals. However, the integrated European indoor and outdoor championships at world cups offer at least an opportunity for the unofficial European 4-way amateur teams to step onto the podium during the award ceremonies. France, Russia, Belgium and Norway have taken turns in winning gold and silver at the European part of the events, often the bronze medals, as well.

4-way teams from additional other countries (Italy, Germany) have used the rare opportunities when they came up and won a few sets of European bronze medals at outdoor events, at least between 1998 and 2017. The adoption of indoor world championships and world cups by FAI/ISC then added new opportunities for European teams, at least at the indoor world cups. Swedish teams are not on the list of outdoor medal winners at any FAI/ISC events so far, even though they have finished in European indoor bronze medal positions twice, Gryttjom Volo in 2016, Echochamber in 2018.

Echochamber at the FAI Indoor World Cup 2016
In fact, Gryttjom Volo and Echochamber both were in 3rd place on the European leaderboard of the FAI Indoor World Cup 2016. Unfortunately for the two Swedish teams, there was no European championship integrated at the first indoor world cup, a year after the first indoor world championship. They left after 5th and 6th places ahead of all other unofficial amateur teams and without FAI/ISC medals.

Gryttjom Volo did not continue after the event in 2016, where Martin Bäcklin, Johan Edvall, Ulf Liljenbäck and Rikard Rodensjö competed for Echochamber. The same lineup recently attended the FAI Indoor World Championship 2025 in April. The first FAI European Indoor Championship was not even a part of an indoor world cup and took place separately in Voss, Norway, in April 2018. Martin Bäcklin, Johan Edvall, Ulf Liljenbäck and Rikard Rodensjö traveled to Norway two years after the event in Poland and won their first set of official FAI/ISC bronze medals.

The Echochamber outdoor lineup, now with former Volo member Mattias Nord for Martin Bäcklin, and with Anders Brouzell on camera, followed up on the European indoor bronze medals with the unofficial amateur world champion title at the FAI Outdoor World Championship 2018 half a year later and confirmed the position a week later at the FAI Indoor World Cup 2018. This indoor world cup in Bahrain did not include a European indoor championship leaderboard.

FAI Indoor bronze medals at the indoor world cup 2018
The next indoor opportunity, this time with an integrated European championship, was coming up at the FAI Indoor World Cup 2022 at Charleroi in Belgium. It was the new Echochamber lineup who would compete in Charleroi and then at the outdoor world championship in Eloy 2022, as well, with Ann-Marie Jarzebowski replacing Johan Edvall (Ulf Liljenbäck, Mattias Nord, Rikard Rodensjö, Anders Brouzell back on camera).

The new 1-year lineup was not tuned in well enough, especially not at the beginning of the year, and Echochamber ended up in 6th place, tied with Dutch team Out Of The Blue. The Dutch national 4-way team will be one of the same opponents, with the new lineup at Skydive Teuge. Roald de Leest and Paul Hofstee have replaced Mandy Feijen and Bart Daenen. Both teams competed with their current lineups at the FAI Indoor World Championship 2025 in April, where Echochamber had the upper hand.

Out Of The Blue's indoor and outdoor lineups are identical, while Echochamber has different ones. Most likely, last year's lineup at the outdoor world championship will be back in the Netherlands (Johan Edvall, Ulf Liljenbäck, Mattias Nord, Rikard Rodensjö, Anders Brouzell on camera). The 19.6 average at Crystal Coast would have been enough to win the European bronze medals in Norway 2023. Echochamber is the top contender for the 3rd place, which could win the team’s first outdoor FAI medals this year.
