Did You Know...

... that Canada and Brazil continued with their 8-way duels at Paraclete XP?

Brazil's 8-way team with coach Kirk Verner in Ottawa 2016
posted May 21st, 2025 - The 8-way competition between Netunos from Brazil and Team Canada at the FAI Indoor World Championship 2025 was actually an 8-way re-match for three of the six teams, as GKXP8 won both events, while Brazil and Canada tried to stay away from the bottom of the world championship leaderboard.

Guest teams Netunos and Team Canada both were able to outscore three U.S. 8-way teams at their national indoor championship at Paraclete XP in February, and both also increased their scoring level until the next event at the same place, the indoor world championship in April.

Netunos returned to North America for the indoor/outdoor double-pack, first the FAI Indoor World Championship 2025, followed less than a week later by the Shamrock Showdown 2025. They had not competed in 4-way and 8-way in February and then committed to double-duties at the indoor world championship. They finished their American Spring Tour 2025 with 8-way only at Skydive DeLand. Team Canada was the country's first 8-way team at indoor or outdoor world championships since Ottawa 2016, where Divergence had their own battle with Brazil's 8-way team. The Canadians of 2016 won that outdoor battle by six points, while Netunos distanced themselves too far ahead this time and at the Canadian 8-way comeback. Richard Bisson was the only team member in both Canadian 8-way lineups of 2016 and 2025.

Richard Bisson is not only a team member of Divergence in 2016 and Team Canada of 2025. He has been a topic for the NSL News quite a few times in the past, as he also created the Canadian 4-way team 4Astrophe, another family team with his daughter Valerie Bisson and his son Yannick Bisson in the lineup.

4Astrophe kept him more busy than the 8-way teams did, and the Bisson family even represented Canada in 4-way Open at the FAI Outdoor World Championship 2022, where they made the Top 10 with a 16.6 average.

Current Team Canada member Travis Wood was one of the opponents for Richard Bisson and 8-way alternate Pete Scharrer in Ottawa 2016. He competed with the Australian 8-way team Innuendo in Ottawa 2016 and finished ahead of Canada and Brazil both on the 8-way leaderboard. He was also a member of the Australian 8-way team in Prostejov 2014. Travis Wood then switched to British 8-way team MicroClim8 who he competed with in 2019 and won the British national outdoor championship. Canada is now the third country that he competed for in 8-way Open.

Team Canada was started when Richard Bisson, Pete Scharrer and Travis Wood joined forces to reinvigorate the Canadian 8-way team. They recruited the best Canadian indoor 4-way team, formerly Flying Fuzion, now Skywolves, bringing Stephanie Longchamps, Pascal Blais and Ben Poiret to the team. They also wanted to bring more junior members into the team and recruited Jen Hart and Ariel Shields who were both relatively new to competition but had excellent potential.

Just before their training camp at Paraclete XP's 8-way Hell Week, Pete Scharrer suffered a detached retina and had to withdraw from the team. Fortunately the Skywolves had just recruited a new member, Thomas Tiberghien, and he was available to join the camp at short notice. The team’s entire training plan was to attend Hell Week in February 2025 and compete at the U.S. indoor championship at the end of that week. Six of the team members had never done 8-way training and competition before.

GKXP8 member Andrew Starr was coaching Team Canada at Hell Week with 6.5 hours of indoor training in five days. Most of the team members competed at the Canadian indoor championship the weekend prior to the world meet and traveled directly to Paraclete XP from that event. Skywolves won the Canadian 4-way competition, retaining their title as the Canadian indoor national 4-way team. Skywolves Stephanie Longchamps, Pascal Blais and Benjamin Poiret then switched to 8-way quickly, together with their 4-way substitute Richard Bisson. Team Canada now discuss potential plans to win the Canadian outdoor championship in October.
