Did You Know...

... that Niklas Hemlin and Andy Grauwels are back as opponents in coaching?

Coach Niklas Hemlin with Chimera
posted Jun 15th, 2022 - One of the interesting topics that were part of yesterday's NSL Live Talk with Niklas Hemlin related naturally to his own position as a very popular coach. Arizona Airspeed lineups of the past most often invented their own strategies and techniques and did not hire coaches to work with. The senior member became the leader and gave directions, including assigning other members as coaches for a camp or passing the rock.

The current lineup with senior members Niklas Hemlin and Mikhail Markine decided to take a different direction and hire Joey Jones for the technical part of the team training, and Jack Jefferies was helping with the integration of the two new members, Joey Marshall and Chris Kuhlmann.

Niklas Hemlin said that he does not have Jack Jefferies' experiences in the territory of group dynamics, leadership and organizational effectiveness. Besides the technical coaching, he is trying to encourage the teams he is coaching to develop their own strategies and procedures and feeds in his own thoughts and suggestions.

Two of the teams he has recently been working with are Chimera, the British national team in 4-way Open, and XPG4, the U.S. national team in 4-way Women, and Niklas Hemlin applies the same coaching techniques with them.

NFTO - XPG4 at the FAI Indoor World Meet 2019
Coach Niklas Hemlin with XPG4
The Chimera/XPG4 coaching combination has an interesting and unusual twist in the relationships between the two teams and a second British team, NFTO, the national team in 4-way Women.

The NSL News took a closer look at the situation in 4-way Women on June 12th, with the conclusion that this year's three top contenders in this FAI category (Nephtys, NFTO, XPG4) are the same as they were in 2019. The same story covered the history of the lineups, which have changed for all three teams since the FAI Indoor World Meet 2019.

The 4-way Women update included the situation between NFTO and XPG4, which relates to coach Niklas Hemlin at the same time. The additional spice between the two 4-way Women teams comes with the fact that former and original NMP PCH HayaBusa member Andy Grauwels is coaching the British team towards their goal of winning the FAI outdoor gold medals this year.

Niklas Hemlin and Andy Grauwels have battled several times against each other for 4-way gold medals, and they will continue this year in their coaching positions. Niklas Hemlin won with Arizona Airspeed in Dubai 2012 and was not in the lineup in Prostejov 2014. Andy Grauwels then won the next two battles with Niklas Hemlin in Ottawa 2016 and Australia 2018.

NFTO - Chimera at the British Outdoor Nationals 2021
British 4-way indoor champions 2022: Chimera
Niklas Hemlin will be involved with Andy Grauwels and NFTO even earlier, as Chimera and NFTO will first try to win their national championships in August. He said that he will travel to Hibaldstow and help Chimera to win the British outdoor title this year.

NFTO are the defending outdoor champions, after a dramatic 11-round battle last year. Chimera and NFTO tied their scores in the jump-off round, and NFTO eventually won the 4-way championship title with the highest score of the meet, the 32-pointer in Round 7 at the end of the second meet day. It was the third consecutive time that NFTO won the national 4-way outdoor title, and Chimera is eager to win their own set of British gold medals for the first time, after their indoor success this year.

They will be on different leaderboards two months later, while they will still be able to compare their scores for the same ten sequences. Niklas Hemlin will turn officially into an opponent at the outdoor world meet, as he is trying to win his second world championship outdoor title in 4-way Open with Arizona Airspeed.

He is hoping that XPG4 will take over the direct battle with NFTO on the 4-way Women leaderboard in Eloy, which completes his special coaching triangle.
