Did You Know...

... that the Qatar Tigers are still thinking of the gold medal option this year?

Last meet with Andy Grauwels: NMP PCH HayaBusa at the CISM 2021
posted Mar 26th, 2022 - The FAI Tanay Mondial 2020 was the last competition for the Qatar Tigers where they applied the FAI/ISC dive pool and rules. They competed at the CISM military world championships in November last year, as the NSL News reported on 24 November 2021.

They won the first FAI 4-way bronze medals for their country in Tanay last year and then added the CISM silver medals three months later. NMP PCH HayaBusa finished in 1st place at both events, as all 4-way top teams in the world have become used to since 2014.

This situation changed when original HayaBusa member Andy Grauwels did not continue after winning the 14th consecutive CISM title in November 2021, and the evidence for the change in the world's 4-way power structure came with the scores of the Shamrock Showdown 2022.

The Qatar Tigers did not arrive for their currently running winter training camp at Skydive City early enough to attend the Shamrock Showdown, as well. HayaBusa and Qatar coach Gary Smith still provided his insights after the competition with NSL Live Talk on March 15th.

Qatar Tigers at the FAI Tanay Mondial 2021
Qatar Tigers at iFLY Tampa this week
The NSL News returned to the competition site of the Shamrock Showdown at Skydive City a few weeks after the event for the conversation with Gary Smith, and another field trip was scheduled this week to follow the Qatar Tigers in training.

The three recent trips were surely worth the 2-hour travel distance between the NSL headquarters in DeLand and Skydive City in Zephyrhills, as the three currently arguably best 4-way teams in the world were in Florida within the 3-week time frame, which does not happen very often.

Training and competition were successful for all three teams, even though the NSL News did not find the Qatar Tigers at Skydive City on Wednesday this week. The weather situation did not allow training jumps, and Gary Smith scheduled indoor training at iFLY Tampa for substitute training.

The NSL-TV camera captured footage of ground work and flying sessions at iFLY Tampa for a new NSL-TV Unfiltered show, and the team took some extra time for NSL Live Talk after the training.

3rd Place: Qatar Tigers at the FAI Tanay Mondial 2020
It is an exciting year for the same Qatar Tigers lineup that has been together for more than 12 years by now, since they all started with AFF training. They will not be able to compete at the upcoming FAI Indoor World Cup, where they could have provided more evidence for a new 4-way power structure in the medal positions.

The Qatar Tigers are the reigning FAI bronze medalists, and they seem to have an opportunity this year for the next step on their 4-way journey. The FAI silver medals could be in reach at the FAI outdoor world meet in Eloy this October. In fact, the Tigers are not even shy of looking at the top spot and FAI gold medals.

Coach Gary Smith sees Arizona Airspeed still as the major obstacle on the way to the world championship title, and he is expecting NMP PCH HayaBusa at a significantly higher scoring and performance level in October. However, Arizona Airspeed seem to have the advantage of an uninterrupted road to the meet on their home turf, while the Belgians and the Tigers both have to deal with breaks in their schedules.

Both teams have to compete at the CISM event this year. The Qatar Tigers cannot compete in Charleroi in April, as their holy month of Ramadan is coming up. HayaBusa's new member Neal Willems has to go through boot camp soon before being fully available for team training. There is still plenty of time for all three teams until the outdoor world meet, and the Qatar Tigers will carefully follow the next Airspeed/HayaBusa showdown at the indoor world cup.
