NSL News Coverage of the FAI Indoor World Cup 2024

Did You Know...

... that Arizona Airspeed support the NSL operation with humor and fund-raiser?

Arizona Airspeed in outdoor training at Paraclete XP
posted Aug 8th, 2020 - Arizona Airspeed's new lineup had a surprise for the NSL News when they posted a video clip with bits of NSL Live Talk that were recorded and published since the National Skydiving League was founded in 1998.

In the past, it has been the NSL TV camera that was pointing at Arizona Airspeed who were answering questions asked by the NSL News reporter. This time, there was no NSL News near the team when they first recorded their own conversation, followed by a most interesting and entertaining video clip that Airspeed put together.

The surprise became even bigger when it turned out that the Airspeed video clip was a part of a fund-raising campaign that the team had initiated. The NSL News has used fund-raising options (GoFundMe, Patreon) in the past, mostly to finance travel expenses for the coverage of major Formation Skydiving events in different countries, which are not included in the small NSL budget.

This time, the new GoFundMe campaign was set up by Arizona Airspeed, and all team members even made the first donations themselves. Niklas Hemlin and Joey Marshall explained their reasoning and motivation in the beginning of the video. It was a heart-warming experience and surprise for the NSL News discovering the very special news on Saturday morning.

Last indoor meet: Paraclete XP Indoor Championship 2020
The NSL News has pointed out the implications of the corona virus crisis on Formation Skydiving competition from many different angles, including the situation for the skydiving federations who had to make very inconvenient decisions, for event hosts, the skydiving industry, and many small businesses in the sport.

Of course, and naturally for the NSL News, the situation of the teams and competitors has always been the main topic, as they are the backbone and the foundation of the sport and for the National Skydiving League. There could be no events, and there would be no content for NSL News without them.

The first mention of the corona virus crisis by the NSL News came with the update on March 10th this year. The story was still a part of the aftermath of the Paraclete XP Indoor Championship 2020, which would be the last event in the United States before the shutdown of Formation Skydiving competition, after Eliana Rodriguez and Michelle Karamon had made one attempt to host a competition of the Arizona Skydiving League.

A few events followed in other countries in March (Czech Republic, France, Finland, Australia). Then came a total break of three months before Skydive Elsinore hosted a meet of the Southern California Skydiving League in June.

Still to come: Unpublished leaderboards and stories
The NSL News had covered a total of 42 events in the same time period last year, and the balance between the time before the corona virus crisis and now has not changed much at all. In fact, the usually busiest time of the year, with scores, videos and information pouring in from across the globe, has generated next to nothing this year, and the outlook is not very encouraging.

The NSL News has used the opportunity to add unpublished interviews from the archives, and soon more unpublished leaderboards and stories will also be posted. Online interviews with teams and competitors, mostly regarding the situation in the middle of the pandemic as the main topic, have also brought interesting breaks and updates from different countries.

However, the situation of the NSL News and the operation of the National Skydiving League was never a story until Arizona Airspeed created the video clip and commented on the unusual topic.

The lack of activities and events is surely not making it easier for the NSL operation, including the NSL event network and the NSL News services. However, a surprise like this on Saturday morning pays back for the difficulties and efforts that it takes to keep a small-business operation alive. Thank you from the heart for the ongoing interest in the NSL News, and to everybody who went even beyond and supported Arizona Airspeed's fund-raiser, which helps to secure the continuity in the near future.
