NSL News Coverage of the FAI Indoor World Cup 2024

Did You Know...

... that the VAF Warriors are still undefeated in Denmark?

VAF Warriors at the FAI World Meet 2014
posted Oct 27th, 2017 - The 4-way Open Class duel between VAF Warriors and Pangaea for the top spot in Denmark used to be a regular feature until Denmark's national team between 2013 and 2016 announced the end of the 4-way career after the FAI Indoor World Cup 2016. Both teams had enjoyed and appreciated their domestic rivalry that helped to push them to higher performance levels.

Pangaea continued as Denmark's national team and represented the Scandinavian country at the FAI Mondial 2016. The team was formed in 2015 and challenged the VAF Warriors for the first time seriously at the national outdoor championships in 2015 (166 - 162).

The Danish duel always ended up with the VAF Warriors ahead of Pangaea, at indoor and outdoor events, while both teams had battled only once before at a wind tunnel competition, the Danish Indoor Nationals 2015 at Bodyflight Bedford.

The VAF Warriors now had a comeback at the national indoor championships, which was hosted by Flyspot in Poland this time. The event was also taking place in the shadow of the FAI Indoor World Meet 2017, where Denmark was not represented, due to the scheduling conflict.

Pangaea at the FAI Mondial 2016
Ten teams traveled from Denmark to Warsaw in Poland for the national indoor championships, which included competition in the AAA and A categories.

It was a new opportunity for Pangaea to take on the old rival, which was even more challenging this time.

Flemming Borup Andersen, the most experienced Pangaea member, was not available for the meet at Flyspot, and former Pangaea member Kjetil Nordin (2015-2016) agreed to step in.

The new situation required Peter Stræde to switch back to his old B-slot as outside center, while the VAF Warriors competed with their original lineup.

It was the first reuion of the original lineup after last year's FAI Indoor World Cup where Vibeke Tidemann had replaced Henning Skov.

The new duel began weeks before the actual competition when Kjetil Nordin (Pangea) and John Petersen (VAF Warriors) tried to advertise their own teams as the underdog. The old rivalry was back before the teams had even traveled to Poland.

The VAF Warriors had the better start and finished the first day with a 4-point lead after Round 5. VAF Warrior John Petersen said that his team was still not quite sure if they would be able to hold off Pangaea in the second half of the meet. However, the 4-point lead had turned into a 10-point distance after Round 8, and the VAF Warriors finally won by 11 points.

AAA Class awards at the Danish Indoor Nationals 2017
Velocitas in 3rd place is a new team in 4-way Women that has former Valkyria members Ditte Pedersen and Mie Junsongin the lineup. Valkyria was formed in 2016 to represent Denmark at the FAI Mondial 2016 in 4-way Women. It was the first meet for Velocitas, and the new team will plan for the 2018 season after an evaluation of the situation. The Retro indoor team once again completed the AAA Class field and "were leading the master class".

Pick-up team Frodo and Friend won the A Class competition with a new unofficial Danish highscore (35) in Round 2. Sky4LL placed second and has plans for next year, as well. Former VAF Warriors videographer Anders Krabbenhøft, who is now filming Pangaea, had his own indoor lineup, including Johnny Haulig Hansen, a form project member of C-team Air4s in 2003 and 2004.

The 2017 season is over in Denmark, and the federation now has to select a new national team for next year, which will not be easy. Pangaea may not continue, and the VAF Warriors consider only random reunions. It will probably be time for some new faces and new teams in Denmark, who will then take on the reunion teams...
