Did You Know...

... that the VAF Warriors have come to the end of the international 4-way competition road?

Last competition at the FAI Indoor World Cup 2016
posted Jan 10th, 2017 - The Sun Path Products NSL News reported on 21 May 2016 that the VAF Warriors were still Denmark's national team in 4-way Open.

However, at the same time it was officially confirmed by the Danish skydiving federation that Pangaea would compete for Denmark at the FAI World Championship of Formation Skydiving 2016, due to Anne Mine Møller's injury and surgery situation.

The whole team would then be back and compete for Denmark at the FAI Indoor World Cup 2016, and Pangaea would stay at home.

It turned out that Anne Mine Møller was fully recovered for the indoor competition in October last year, while another Warrior was not available for the meet at Flyspot in Poland.

Henning Skov had unexpected problems at work and had to cancel the trip to Poland at the last training session, just a few weeks before the competition.

Vibeke Birk Tidemann with Sequence in DeLand

Vibeke Birk Tidemann stepped into the open slot at the last minute. She and her husband Torben had participated in a training camp of the Danish 4-way project in DeLand 2003 .

Then they competed at the Shamrock Showdown, together with current Arizona Airspeed tail Thiago Gomes and VAF Warrior John Peterson.

Then she trained and competed with the Danish 4-way project team Sequence in 2007 - 2009 and came back with the Danish Divas in 2012.

The indoor meet with the VAF Warriors and alternate turned out to be the farewell competition for Denmark's national 4-way team of 2014 - 2016.

The VAF Warriors informed the Sun Path Products NSL News that the team has come to the end of the 4-way road.

They decided at a Christmas dinner that they would stick with the original plan, which had the FAI Mondial 2016 as the main goal.

John Petersen with DaneZ at the FAI World Cup 2005
Team member John Behrendt Petersen explained that it has been a long road for the VAF Warriors, even though the team was formed only in 2013:

"The longest road to become the national team for a Warriors member started on the Danish Project C-Team back in 2004. Otherwise the members have been on various C- and B-Teams on the road to the Warriors."

John Petersen himself was in the DaneZ lineup of 2005 and 2006. Martin Mikkelsen trained and competed with Voluntas in 2011 and 2012. Anne Mine Møller was the alternate for the Danish Divas in 2012.

He said that it is hard for an amateur competitor to make enough money for training and competition, and options to work as a pro in skydiving are limited in Denmark:

"After four years with the Warriors the training and competitions has taken its toll on work and family life. The Warriors started as a team with the rule of 'having fun'. However, the victory at the DFU Open in 2013 gave us the ticket to the FAI World Cup in Banja Luka, and the focus had to be tightened up.

Now the Warriors competed for national championship titles both in outdoor and indoor competition, while Voluntas and DaneZ had once again decided to make their annual reunion. We were not strong enough by then to win over the old national teams and needed more training."

VAF Warriors and Pangaea at DFU Cup 2015
The VAF Warriors did well in Banja Luka with a place in the semifinals, and the team decided to continue with a new and final goal, the FAI Mondial 2016.

The Warriors defended the indoor and outdoor top position in Denmark successfully in 2014 and competed for Denmark at the FAI World Meet in Prostejov 2014.

They started the next 2-year cycle with new coach Roy Janssen and a 1-year commitment, plus the option to continue.

The 2015 season created the new domestic opponent: Pangaea. John Petersen said that his team appreciated the competition, as it pushed the Warriors to a better performance:

"Pangaea helped us to the best results the Warriors have posted to date in the sky and in the tunnel. We want to say thanks for the fights against Pangaea.

Even during the indoor nationals, where Pangaea dug themselves into a hole and could have won, the Warriors managed to win and finish the year with a 'triple' in Denmark."

2016 planning with coach Roy Janssen
The VAF Warriors were happy with the 2015 season, even though the Danish national team once again did not interfere with the top teams in the 4-way world, as Touche did by winning the bronze medals for Denmark in 1993 and 1995. The Warriors placed 12th at the FAI Outdoor World Cup and 11th at the FAI Indoor World Meet.

The Warriors continued with Roy Janssen in 2016 and could not make great progress, as John Petersen explained:

"Anne Mine’s hip injury got in the way of spring training, and the decision to split the FAI events between Warriors and Pangaea was approved by the federation. Team videographer Anders Krabbenhøft still traveled to Ottawa with Denmark's team in 4-way Women, Valkyria.”

The 2016 season eventually had a very late start in August with training for the FAI Indoor World Cup in Warsaw when the next obstacle came up and Henning Skov had to withdraw. John Petersen said that the Warriors are done now and might only have their own random reunions, as DaneZ and Voluntas had them in the past years: "The path should be clean and easy for Pangaea now..."
