Did You Know...

... that DeLand Majik defeated Airspeed Vertical at the Shamrock Showdown 2002?

Joey Jones at the Shamrock Showdown 2002
posted Mar 6th, 2017 - The Sun Path Products NSL News mentioned once again on 1 March 2017 that Arizona Airspeed is still undefeated at the upcoming Shamrock Showdown:

"Airspeed has never lost in DeLand, even when the French national teams or NMP PCH HayaBusa were visiting. There is no doubt that the new lineup wants to maintain this unique streak, while Rhythm wants to repeat what they just did in Raeford. It will be another real showdown in DeLand..."

This has actually been "fake news" over the many years of SKYLEAGUE.COM updates. Joey Jones recently informed the Sun Path Products NSL News that his own team, DeLand Majik, won the very first Shamrock Showdown 2002 in DeLand.

The event happened before data was entered into the SKYLEAGUE.COM database, which explains the missing information and the incorrect news.

Airspeed Vertical lost the meet by three points at the team's first visit in DeLand - and then did not come back until 2007.

DeLand Majik after the Shamrock Showdown 2002
It was actually DeLand Majik who did not give away a Shamrock Showdown in the team's three years on their home turf. Airspeed Odyssey's 2007 lineup then started the winning streak five years later, which has not been broken ever since.

It was a very colorful AAA Class leaderboard at the Shamrock Showdown 2002, which included the national teams from Great Britain, Italy, Netherlands and Sweden. Neither DeLand Majik nor Airspeed Vertical would compete for the U.S.A. at the FAI World Meet 2003 in Gap. The Golden Knights won the USPA Nationals 2002 and then the FAI silver medals in France.

The Sun Path Products NSL News found the original meet story covering the Shamrock Showdown 2002 in the archives. The data with the actual event information has now been added, the Shamrock Showdown 2002 has its own place at SKYLEAGUE.COM and Arizona Airspeed still made history in 2002 - together with DeLand Majik.

Airspeed Odyssey at the Shamrock Showdown 2007

17 March 2002: Did you know that history was made today?

It was incredible, exciting, and almost mind-boggling.

No team in the history of 4-way Formation Skydiving competition had ever scored above 22.0 average in a ten-round meet.

The exceptional athletes of Airspeed Vertical (Craig Girard, John Eagle, Neal Houston, Mark Kirkby, Marc Steinbaugh) had won each meet ever since they formed the team in the beginning of the 2000 season, including U.S. Nationals, World Cup and World Championship. And they competed at many competitions.

Then they travelled to DeLand to compete at the Shamrock Showdown 2002 and posted a 22.3 meet average - their highest ten-round meet average in team history and in history of 4-way competition. And it still was not good enough today.

DeLand Majik did what nobody has done before and few people thought could happen at all. They defeated the current world champion with a 22.6 meet average by three points.

Making 22+ history together: DeLand Majik and Airspeed Vertical
The emotions and the excitement in DeLand matched the quality and intensity of the competition. A very friendly atmosphere between the teams and competitors combined with very competitive skydiving and outstanding performances. Participants, spectators and media could enjoy two days of a fun event. The local TV media took the victory of the local heroes to the screens the same night. The NSL News will follow up soon. And the probably best two teams currently in the world were great sports after the meet was over. Majik and Vertical celebrated the history making scores together.

Vertical’s veteran and multiple world champion in 4-way and 8-way, Craig Girard, found the right words for the events of this weekend: "We came here and performed as good as never before in our team history. There is no reason to be disappointed if this is not good enough to win. Somebody must have been incredibly good to beat us."

The NSL News will follow up with more meet information and pictures very soon. However, NSL-TV already shows the jump that set the foundation for Majik's victory. In Round 3, Majik came up with a performance from a different planet and took the lead by three points. Enjoy this incredible performance for now. More coverage of the FSL Shamrock Showdown will follow soon on NSL-TV.
