Did You Know...

... that Germany lost an 8-way battle and won the Fun Flag?

German delegation members with the Fun Flag

posted Oct 22nd, 2016 - The aftermath of the FAI Mondial 2016 did not include an update of the Fun Flag situation after members of the South African 4-way Open Class team Savolo had their own adventure, as the Sun Path Products NSL News reported on September 16th.

The next spot of the Fun Flag was not easy to see.

It may have even required the eagle's eye perspective from a parachute to find it, while the location was still very much related to the competition.

Members of the German delegation had taken possession of the flag and placed it on one wing of Skydive Chicago's DC3, which is exclusively memorabilia in Ottawa.

It is not quite sure whether the Fun Flag on the DC3 was the original version or not, as the Germans had also prepared a few fake copies.

Two members of the German 8-way team Airbus (Steffen Schiedeck, Uli Sehrbrock) were posing in the photo that is showing the Fun Flag on the wing of the DC3.

Steffen Schiedeck even had additional information and footage of the following Fun Flag events.

It was not the case that Airbus had too much spare time to deal with the Fun Flag. In fact, the German 8-way team was intensively engaged in a serious battle with Microclim8 for the 5th place. This duel was expected, as the Sun Path Products NSL News reported on September 2nd.

Germany had won all 8-way battles with UK teams since 2004; however, Microclim8 had shown with a 13.5 average at the national championships that Airbus might be in trouble this time, after finishing with 12.9 at the German Nationals 2016.

Happy end for the Fun Flag at the closing banquet
Airbus had a good start and seemed to continue with the 8-way history between the two countries. The scores in Round 4 then changed the situation and eliminated the 3-point advantage that Airbus had, while Microclim8 gained momentum. The German team could not win a round any longer after the 3-point loss in Round 4, and Microclim8 finished in 5th place with a 4-point advantage.

Neither team was able to fend off the Qatar Falcons who claimed the 4th place and the spot behind the three 8-way powerhouses from the U.S.A., France and Russia.

Of course, the Fun Flag story continued, and the lost battle with Microclim8 did not keep Steffen Schiedeck from updating the Sun Path Products NSL News at the end of the competition. The Fun Flag had a literal highlight during the closing banquet when it took off under a bunch of balloons. It was for sure the original version of the Fun Flag this time...
