Did You Know...

... that Thunder ISR has moved up to the next scoring level?

tomscat Trophy 2014 medals and prizes
posted Jun 14th, 2014 - This weekend's first update comes with the final scores from the Tomscat Trophy in the Netherlands.

The Sun Path Products NSL News preview of the event on 10 June 2014 had introduced the field of 4way teams, and it turned out that 18 teams competed this year, exactly the same number of teams as in 2013.

It was the 20th anniversary of the Tomscat Trophy, which followed the recent 20-year anniversary celebration of Arizona Airspeed. There is even a real connection between Tomscat Trophy and Arizona Airspeed, as original Airspeed member Dan BC was in the same plane crash that killed two members of the Dutch 4way team, which was the reason for the inauguration of the Tomscat Trophy as an annual memorial.

20-year winning anniversary: Paul Hofstee
There was another 20-year anniversary celebration at this year's Tomscat Trophy. Thunder ISR easily won the AAA Class competition, and Center Outside Paul Hofstee won the event for the 20th consecutive time. Paul Hofstee is the longest standing recreational 4way competitor who is scoring and performing on world class level.

The 22.9 average has moved Thunder ISR to the next scoring level after lingering on the 21+ outdoor level since 2012. The competition draw included a Super Sequence (D,9,A,E) in Round 5, which could have boosted Thunder's average far above the 23-average level.

However, Thunder ISR could not really take advantage of the opportunity after actually completing 47 points within working time. Team videographer Grim Swinnen was not available for the event, and Thunder had to recruit a substitute on camera.

Thunder after the 22.9 average this weekend
They found a very experienced 4way videographer, Hans Ypma, who filmed the former Dutch national team Whooops for several years. Paul Hofstee said that everything went well until he missed the exit timing in Round 5, which caused the deduction of 14 points due to the camera angle.

The remaining 33-pointer for Round 5 gives the 22.9 average actually more value, as a Super Sequence boosts the meet average out of the normal 10-round proportion. Paul Hostee said that his team was disappointed, and the 47-pointer would have been a new personal record, as well.

Paul Hofstee has a 44-pointer under his belt, for a Super Sequence (J,M,Q,P,L) with Dynamic Fource at the World Meet 2010 in Menzelinsk. Thunder saw a similar Super Sequence (L,9,P,A) at the Tomscat Trophy 2012 and posted a 32-pointer. The 33-pointer after the 14 point deductions is still a new Thunder highscore. However, Paul Hofstee has to wait for the next opportunity...
