Did You Know...

... that mixed-gender lineups dominated again at the outdoor world cup?

Longest travel distance: Chop Chop! from Australia
posted Sep 27th, 2025 - The NSL News aftermath of FAI/ISC indoor and outdoor world championships and world cups has included the gender breakdown of all participating 4-way teams and competitors in horizontal formation skydiving competition in the past years for informational purposes. There are three different categories: all-male, all-female and mixed-gender lineups. All-male and mixed-gender lineups can only register for the 4-way Open Class competition. All-female lineups have the option to compete in 4-way Women or in 4-way Open. All 4-way teams apply the same competition draw. FAI/ISC medals will only be given to teams in 4-way Open and in 4-way Women events.

The NSL News has listed all mixed-gender lineups in the same category, even though the gender combination in 4-way Open allows all three different variations between three female and one male team member, or three males and one female, and the 2-2 combination. In fact, the 4-way Open Class leaderboard could also include all-female lineups, which is a very rare occasion. However, the USPA Nationals do not have a separate leaderboard for the 4-way Women event.

All-female teams have to compete in 4-way Open and qualify for FAI/ISC events with the highest ranking position between each other on the 4-way Open Class leaderboard. The qualification situation is the same in most other countries. Military CISM world championships include only 4-way Men and 4-way Women events. There is no CISM 4-way Open Class for mixed-gender lineups.

1-3 mixed-gender lineup: Les Hermines (FR)
The mixed-gender category has become the most popular one on 4-way Open Class leaderboards. 43% of the participating teams in horizontal 4-way competition at the FAI Outdoor World Cup 2025 consisted of the three different mixed-gender combinations. 45% of the 4-way teams were in the same category at the FAI Outdoor World Cup 2023 in Voss, Norway, where a total of 155 participants in 4-way split into 68% of male and 32% of female competitors.

105 competitors traveled to Teuge in the Netherlands this year and matched the 2023 numbers almost exactly (67% - 33%). The mixed-gender category still dominated the 4-way Open Class leaderboard with 43% of the 21 teams, which is the only one available for any teams with a male competitor in the lineup. 45% of mixed-gender lineups had dominated the participation in 2023, as well.

FAI/ISC is also sanctioning the military CISM world championships, where the different format has been applied. The last CISM world championship in Hungary 2024 was attended by 4-way Men teams from 15 different countries and four national teams in 4-way Women. The next CISM world championship is coming up in November in Qatar, where NMP PCH HayaBusa will try to defend the 16 CISM world championship titles that they have won with different lineups between 2007 and 2024.

3-1 mixed-gender lineup: Axis
The four teams at the botton of the 4-way Open Class leaderboard featured the mixed-gender options perfectly. Chop Chop! from Australia presented the 2-2 combination in front of the camera. The lineup of Les Hermines from France consisted of one male and three female team members. British Army Volt4ge had another 2-2 combination, and substitute and player-coach Kate Lindsley turned Axis into a 3-1 combination.

Chop Chop! and Les Hermines had their own exciting internal battle between the five female and three male competitors. They finished with a 3-point difference (131 - 128) after all ten rounds. The Australian team had the longest travel distance to attend the event in the Netherlands and won this duel.

The two British teams at the bottom of the leaderboard featured another 2-2 combination (Volt4ge) and one of the 3-1 combinations (Axis). The medal positions in 4-way Open and on the combined 4-way leaderboard were all taken by teams with all-male lineups. Two of them (Golden Knights, NMP PCH HayaBusa) will face each other again in 4-way Men at the CISM world championship in November.
