Did You Know...

... that Gary Smith points out young competitors in the belated Coaches Corner wrap-up?

18+ average age: CZ Skywalkers Most
posted Sep 22nd, 2025 - The NSL News was not able to wrap up the Coaches Corner with NSL Live Talk after the conclusion of the FAI Outdoor World Cup 2025. The very late completion of the ten rounds in all events happened literally in the last minute of the event. In fact, meet director Ronald Overdijk needed an extension of 30 minutes before he could release all teams for award and closing ceremony.

Coach Gary Smith discussed the situation with the NSL News before the start of the competition on August 27th. He followed up after Round 4, when French national coach Mathieu Bernier had some time to join Gary Smith and provide his insights at the end of the first competition day.

The NSL News recorded several other interviews and conversations with teams and competitors, while there was no opportunity for an event summary in the Coaches Corner. Gary Smith was back in the Dutch/Belgian area when the next event took place two weeks after the outdoor world cup. He had followed the difficult situation at Germany's national outdoor championship online and traveled from his home on the island of Texel to Namur in Belgium to witness the BENELUX Championship, where teams from Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg met for their national outdoor championships and an open leaderboard for visiting teams.

NMP PCH HayaBusa - Out Of The Blue - Ayro at the FAI Outdoor World Cup 2025

Finally, the opportunity to wrap up the NSL Coaches Corner with Gary Smith and a summary and evaluation of the outdoor world cup at Skydive Teuge in the Netherlands came after the next two events in Germany and Belgium were concluded. Gary Smith was back at his home on Texel and took the time for the next part of the world cup aftermath.

The conversation naturally included the two events that followed the outdoor world cup and were directly and indirectly connected to the main event in Teuge. The national championships still have their own very important meaning for all teams who can win medals in the additional different categories. The best teams in each country also usually have to win the national championship to qualify for the next FAI outdoor world championship or world cup.

Four of teams at the BENELUX Championship had competed at the outdoor world cup and were back in 4-way action two weeks later. NMP PCH HayaBusa won FAI bronze medals in Teuge and then qualified officially as the national team in 4-way Open in Namur. Belgian team Ayro attended both events, as well, after the team record performance two weeks earlier. Out Of The Blue, Dutch national team for several years, finished three points ahead of Ayro at the outdoor world cup and won the national championship title again with the new lineup. Funky Falcon had represented the Netherlands in 4-way Women at the world cup and was one of the three Dutch AAA Class teams at the BENELUX Championship.

Out Of The Blue with Siem Ibens (left)
Gary Smith pointed out that several teams have been in the process of recruiting young new team members. Out Of The Blue is one of them, as the conversation with the Ibens family on September 1st discovered. Siem Ibens is the new OOTB Point with his 18 years of age, and he was in the lineup at the BENELUX Championship.

The Czech Skywalkers are the well known role-model example with their 18+ average age, and the world's current 4-way leader, Aethers Lille, has also one of the youngest lineups in 4-way history. NMP PCH HayaBusa have their own contribution with the newest team member Ray Lodens.

There was another indirect connection, this one between outdoor world cup and German outdoor nationals. The old and new German 4-way Open Class champions of the Airbus Illertissen 4-way team will meet most of the national teams of other countries in Teuge next year at the outdoor world championship in Eloy. The new Airbus lineup fits into the same category of teams who are recruiting younger team members. Both of Thomas Mack's sons, Tim (Point) and Moritz (Camera), are of a similar age as the youngest Skywalkers, Aethers and OOTB members. All of them will be opponents at the next world championships and many more events in the future.
