Did You Know...

... that Final Fire were closer than expected to AerodynamiX in Austria?

Final Fire team mates: Elisabeth and Thomas Haber
posted Aug 20th, 2025 - Austrian 4-way team Final Fire and the team members in the different lineups since 2015 have been on Austrian and international leaderboards at least since 2005. Austria is actually one of the countries who have won bronze medals at FAI World Championships. The national team of 1987, Amadeus with a military lineup, placed 3rd in Brazil, after a 5th place for Flugsaurier in 1985.

Two of the original and current Final Fire members, Thomas Haber and Horst Scheiber, had Elisabeth Haber (Tail) and Jakob Strauß (Point), in the lineup who offered the defending champions of military 4-way team AerodynamiX serious opposition at the national outdoor championship this month, with Martin Pail on camera.

Thomas Haber's wife Elisabeth was filming the team in the last two years before she took the tail slot eventually. Martin Pail was replacing her as the team videographer. Jakob Strauß had joined Final Fire in 2021. Thomas Haber and Horst Scheiber collected their world meet experiences for Austria with Monkey Circus in Maubeuge 2008 and were back on the 4-way Open Class leaderboard with Final Fire in Ottawa 2016, now together with Patrick Kosmus and Kurt Seinitzer, Horst Richter on camera.

In fact, the same lineup of 2016 had also attended the will take place, Skydive Teuge. Final Fire were one of the seven teams who made it into the finals of Round 10 at the last FAI/ISC event with the cuts after Round 8.

The NSL News covered the 10-year anniversary of hosting FAI World Cup 2015 ten years ago at the same place where this year's outdoor world cupthe same event with the first preview on June 24th, and the first list of pre-registered teams included an undefined team from Austria. The registration was not confirmed for the current list of 16 teams in 4-way Open.

HSV Red Bull Salzburg AerodynamiX was the last team that represented Austria at an international FAI/ISC event, the FAI Indoor World Championship 2023. Later the same year, AerodynamiX took the national outdoor championship title from Final Fire, who had still won the 4-way competition a year earlier by a single point at their annual reunion. AerodynamiX had already claimed the national indoor championship title in 2023, a month before competing in Charleroi. Final Fire is an outdoor team and competed only once at an indoor event in February 2017, three years before AerodynamiX began the pursuit of Austria's 4-way top positions.

Hard smack on soft flesh: Wolfgang Niederl (right)
AerodynamiX were actually in a similar situation, as previous team videographer Michael Urban has also taken an active slot in the current lineup. Final Fire and AerodynamiX both could not train much before the national outdoor championship, which was probably the reason why they were closer to each other than expected. The reigning champions had more work than they may have anticipated to keep Final Fire in check. There was only a 1-point difference throughout the first six rounds, a 3-point difference going into the last round.

Final Fire teamed up for 8-way once again with 4-way bronze medalists Slow Motion for the 8ung lineup and won the event easily. Final Fire's Horst Scheiber celebrated his 4000th jump in the traditional Austrian fashion.

Formation Skydiving Coordinator Wolfgang Niederl, national 4-way and 8-way legend, was in charge of punishing Horst Scheiber with the hard smack on soft flesh at the end of the day. Neither AerodynamiX nor any other 4-way team will compete for Austria in the Netherlands this month, while AerodynamiX might still attend the CISM World Championship as a military lineup in November.
