... that the Northern California Skydiving League had a successful comeback?

Boarding at the NCSL June meet
posted Jun 21st, 2023 - The NSL News announced on February 15th that the Northern California Skydiving League will have a comeback this year. Lori Connor had launched the league in 2014 and was rewarded for her impressive efforts with the Skydiver of the Year award, as the NSL News reported on 24 February 2015.

She continued the league until the corona virus crisis brought her efforts in Northern California to an end in September 2019. She was missing the events and the 4-way community in her region and decided to plan for a comeback when the implications of the pandemic seemed to be reduced to a level where indoor and outdoor events would be worth the efforts again.

The NSL News reported her indoor preparations for the outdoor season on May 5th, and the first outdoor meet last weekend turned out to be a great success.

Her outdoor season opener was scheduled for the same weekend when 4-way teams in Germany and Czech Republic would compete at the same time and use the synchronized NSL competition draw. The six teams in Northern California could compare their scores with AA Class teams in both countries, and the new NCSL Rookie Class teams were on the same leaderboard with a strong German Paranodon Futura lineup. Lori Connor provided the summary of the competition at Skydive California.

NCSL June Meet - By Lori Connor

The NCSL officially returned to the sky this last Saturday at Skydive California with its first meet of the year which was labelled as "Team for a Day – Next Level!" An exciting change was made this year by putting together player-coached pick-up teams, encouraged after great feedback after the skills camp held back in May at SkyDance Skydiving. Three of the same May coaches were back as player-coaches at this meet – Deanna Frank, Julius Frank and Matt Stephens.

The focus remained on skills building while taking it to the next level by using it in a competition. The format was such a great success that it will be offered again at all of our NCSL meets, as long as there are enough willing NCSL coaches. Teams and coaches worked hard throughout a day of 95 degree temperatures.

The Good Cheer Club was one of the four Rookie Class teams competing at Saturday's meet. Although not placing, the team gets an honorable mention since they were the only Rookie Class team registering with a complete lineup and without a player-coach. Jeff Brundage (Point), Antar Gutierrez (Inside Center), Eric Loofbourrow (Outside Center), Steve Mason (Tail) and Michael Gregg on camera are planning to be back for the upcoming meets.

Hot 4-way day at Skydive California
A big thanks goes out to Maria Garcia Sheets, who was our judge for this meet. It was a hot one and everyone really appreciated her dedication and hard work.

Video was a big deal at this meet. It was very hard to find: "We sought high and low and were able to finally locate four amazingly wonderful camera fliers to film the pick-up teams. Two of the teams with their own lineups had also secured their own video."

A big shout out to Skydive California for the lift to altitude in their beautiful Caravan and seamless manifesting the entire day. Skydive California not only hosted the event but also provided sponsorship to make the player-coached teams more affordable for everyone. The teams were covering coaches and video slots as part of the registration.

The next meet of the Northern California Skydiving League is scheduled for July 8th, and registration will open up very soon.
