NSL News Coverage of the FAI Indoor World Cup 2024

Did You Know...

... that teams are ready for Shamrock Showdown Round 1 in DeLand?

Jonathan Perl with Mr. Pink at the NSL Championship 1998
posted Mar 9th, 2023 - Thursday was the last opportunity for training before Round 1 of the Shamrock Showdown 2023, which is scheduled for Friday morning. The French national team in 4-way Open had their last day of the 1-week outdoor camp at Skydive DeLand, as the NSL News reported on March 7th.

Arizona Airspeed completed five training jumps on Thursday, and Pour Decisions, with former Airspeed members Craig Girard, Eliana Rodriguez and videographer Taylor Buffington, joined them with their own jumps from the Cessna Caravan.

Jill Stephenson and Jonathan Perl complete the Pour Decisions lineup and will continue with their two player-coaches throughout the complete 2023 season until the USPA Nationals at Paraclete XP in September. Jill Stephenson competed recently with Greenlight at the Paraclete XP Indoor Championship 2023, where Jonathan Perl did not show up this year.

He had spent the 2021 season with Platinum XP and player-coach Kirk Verner at the Paraclete XP Indoor Championship 2022. Jonathan Perl was one of the original Mr. Pink members, a 4-way team from Georgia that competed at the first NSL Championship in 1998.

NSL-TV Unfiltered: Shamrock Showdown 2023 training on Thursday
Doug Barron with SDC Rhythm XP at the FAI Tanay Mondial in 2021
The NSL News pointed out earlier that the Shamrock Showdown 2023 is a new version of the last world championship, with the Top 4 in Eloy 2022 (Arizona Airspeed, NMP PCH HayaBusa, Qatar Tigers, France) lined up to check their starting position into the new 2-year cycle. The same Top 4 of the current 4-way world have continued with exactly the same lineups that they competed with in October last year.

The situation in DeLand becomes even more interesting and exciting compared to the last outdoor world championship, as a second U.S. national team is also getting ready for the same Shamrock Showdown competition beginning tomorrow morning.

SDC Rhythm XP competed for the U.S. delegation at the FAI Tanay Mondial in August 2021. Doug Barron attended his first world championship in Russia with the SDC Rhythm XP lineup of 2021 (Christy Frikken, Steve Lefkowitz, Andrew Happick, Justin Wageman on camera).

Doug Barron is the only current team member who competed in Russia, and he knows some of his opponents after meeting them live at his own first world championship. NMP PCH HayaBusa won with Andy Grauwels and the previous Belgian lineup in Russia, and Doug Barron outscored Qatar Tigers and France with SDC Rhythm XP. The French 4-way Open Class team is now in DeLand with three members of the 2021 lineup (Damien Gouriou, Alban Rumolo, David Ricard).

Arizona Airspeed at the Shamrock Showdown 2007
SDC Rhythm XP's current lineup, with three new team members since August 2021, will probably not be able to challenge the Top 4 teams of the last outdoor world championship in Eloy yet. However, the new Rhythm lineup delivered an impressive performance at the Paraclete XP Indoor Championship 2023, where they won the bronze medals.

Rhythm is still in winter training in Sebastian, and the new team members will now meet the best teams in the world in competition. Doug Barron did not want to miss this unique opportunity to share the international experiences with his new team mates.

Five other teams from Florida have the same opportunity at the Shamrock Showdown and signed up to watch the best 4-way teams in the world this weekend.

It is not new that Florida 4-way teams can meet the world's top teams once a year. The Shamrock Showdown has brought national 4-way teams from many different countries to DeLand since 2001, including reigning and future world champions. Airspeed's Niklas Hemlin is glad to see a comeback situation for the Shamrock Showdown in DeLand. Airspeed lineups have been undefeated at the event since 2007, and the winner of the event became usually the next world champion...
