posted Jun 18th, 2022 - The Paranodon Cup 2022 in Illertissen, Germany, was the third 4-way competition last weekend, and it was the only live outdoor event. The Brazilian 4-way teams had completed their eight rounds in the 12-foot flying chamber of Copa iFLY in Brazilia, and U.S. teams had posted their scores online as a part of the SDC Cloud Games.

The total of 34 teams competing last weekend split up in 13 (Brazil), 12 (Germany) and 9 (Cloud Games). The 12 German and 9 U.S. 4-way teams all completed ten outdoor rounds, which had two different competition draws.

The German national team, Airbus Illertissen, might have offered Skydive Midwest NEXT some opposition in the AAA Class if they had identical ten sequences. The two draws were too different for a reasonable comparison of the meet averages, as the Cloud Games draw included a Super Sequence with five random formations (A,P,N,G,F) in Round 6, which boosted the final average.

Both teams could be back for a 10-round competition with the same AAA Class sequences at the NSL Pre-Nationals Cloud 2022, where they could also meet the three currently strongest 4-way teams in the world and other stronger teams on the same leaderboard.

4-way Teams at the Paranodon Cup 2022

The German AAA Class teams did not have the opportunity to improve their team record averages with a Super Sequence in the ten rounds of the average draw.

It was an interesting coincidence that the German teams already had their own share of a Super Sequence in Round 10 (B,F,D,E,A) of the national championships last year. That's when most of the teams posted new team record averages.

Airbus Illertissen had turned a 3-point deficit after Round 9 into a 7-point victory with the Super Sequence in Round 10 last year. Three of the German AAA Class teams were back for the ten outdoor rounds in Illertissen, and it was no surprise that they could not increase their own highscores.

Last year's national championships were also the first competition for the new 4-way Women team Meltemi Illertissen, who outscored Skynamite and qualified as the German national team for the FAI Outdoor World Meet 2022 in this FAI category.

The Paranodon Cup featured once again the three generations of the Troegele family, with father and national coach Robert Troegele in the Paranodon SOS lineup, and his son Andreas Troegele on camera for Airbus Illertissen.

The youngest Troegele 4-way competitor is Julius, son of videographer Andreas and grandson of SOS member Robert Troegele. He is 19 years of age and performs in front and behind the camera both for his Paranodon Futura 6 team. His father Andreas Troegele said that he is very talented and fills any slots if he is needed in the active lineup.

There were even more family relationships at the Paranodon Cup this year. Airbus Illertissen's outside center Thomas Mack has a 16-year old son Tim, who is already in 4-way action in the same slot as his father. He trains and competes with the youngest Paranodon Futura lineup (6).

Nadelja Rivers is the oldest team member with 22 years of age. 20-year old Finn Kirsch is the inside center and the son of Dieter Kirsch, who was a long-time member of German national 4-way and 8-way teams at several world meets and world cups.

Last and not least Futura 4-way member is Felicitas Hormuth, with 17 years of age, daughter of Ralf Hormuth, who is an active German Canopy Formation competitor with world meet experiences. Future 6 has one of the youngest outdoor lineups in the history of the sport, and fathers Thomas Mack and Andreas Troegele both hope that their sons will eventually take their slots in the Airbus lineup of the future...
