Did You Know...

... that Prison 9 member Scott Latinis had a special anniversary today?

Prison 8 outdoor training at Skydive Paraclete XP
posted May 18th, 2022 - The 18th of May is a very special day for Texas Skydiving League director and Prison 9 member Scott Latinis. It was on that day in 1980 when he made his first skydive, which made it a 42-year anniversary this Wednesday at Skydive Paraclete XP.

His 8-way team Prison 9 was in outdoor training at Paraclete XP this week, which made the anniversary just another skydiving day for him. However, he was not alone on the same day in 1980, as he and NSL founder Kurt Gaebel recently discovered. They shared the date of their first skydive, even though they were geographically far away from each other at that time.

The NSL News scheduled a field trip to Skydive Paraclete not only for the chance of possibly celebrating the special anniversary with Scott Latinis. Prison 9 and XPG4 training were more than enough reason for a visit, and XP8 will follow up with their own outdoor training at the beginning of next week.

XPG4 coach Niklas Hemlin was at Paraclete XP, as well, and he took some time later for an Airspeed update, and to talk about a special event that Scott Latinis and Skydive Spaceland Houston, Niklas Hemlin and NSL News have decided to organize together on the July 23/24 weekend, the Pre-Nationals 2022. More information will be posted very soon.

Scott Latinis had a very busy last training day with Prison 9, and there was no time for a celebration of the 42-year anniversary in freefall. The two beginners of 18 May 1980 decided to postpone the celebration and try again for the 43-year anniversary in 2023.

Prison 9 were training with exactly the same lineup who placed 3rd at the Paraclete XP Indoor Championship 2022. SDC Rhythm XP's Doug Barron brought his 4-way team videographer Charlie Mcgee to film the 8-way outdoor training, as well.

Doug Barron is Rhythm's only current 4-way member in the Prison 9 lineup. He has not missed an 8-way competition since he and his long-time team mate and friend Andrew Happick formed their own first Rhythm 8-way team in 2016. Andrew Happick is now training and competing with XP8.

The Prison 9 lineup is a colorful one, and it includes three of Doug Barron's toughest 4-way opponents. Skydive Midwest NEXT members Lauren Byrd, Gorka Amian and Greg Oldendick added 8-way training and competition with Rhythm 8 and Prison 9 to their agenda a few years ago. All three NEXT members have been in the Prison 9 lineup together since the Paraclete XP Indoor Championship 2021.

Prison 9 - Veloce QRF at the Paraclete XP Indoor Championship 2022
3rd place for Prison 9 at the Paraclete XP Indoor 2022
Former Golden Knights member Matt Accord and Brian Ball joined the Rhythm 8/Prison 9 lineup when it was formed in 2016, Doug Hendrix and Scott Latinis are completing the current lineup. Doug Barron's 8-way team has not won any USPA medals yet, and they will most likely change this at Skydive Chicago this year.

The withdrawal of the Golden Knights from Formation Skydiving competition opens up a medal position for other teams, and Prison 9 may have only the annual Arizona Airspeed reunion lineup as an opponent for the medal positions behind XP8.

The progress and the results of the Prison 9 training with a consistent lineup is obvious and deserved. Veloce QRF's signature lineup had to experience the rising opponent. They had won all earlier duels with the Rhythm 8/Prison 9 lineups at the previous Paraclete XP 8-way meets. Prison 9 with the current lineup won for the first time at the 2021 event (190 - 182) and confirmed the power position in this duel in February this year (211 - 201).

Doug Barron on the other side will try to find a way how to reverse the situation between SDC Rhythm XP and his three 8-way team mates of Skydive Midwest NEXT, who have outscored him at the first two 4-way meets of the year...
