NSL News Coverage of the FAI Indoor World Cup 2024

Did You Know...

... that the Shamrock Showdown has its 20-year anniversary in March?

Celebrations at the Shamrock Showdown 2002
posted Jan 19th, 2022 - NMP PCH HayaBusa and Arizona Airspeed have finalized their travel plans for the world's most anticipated new duel at the Shamrock Showdown 2022. Both teams have not met each other at a dropzone since the Belgian 4-way world champions visited the United States for the USPA Nationals 2019.

HayaBusa and Airspeed have been battling with each other at each world meet since 2008, even though other U.S. teams (DeLand Majik, DeLand Fire) outscored the original HayaBusa lineup in 2004 and 2006. Airspeed won the duel in 2008, 2010 and 2012 before HayaBusa took the indoor and outdoor top spot in 2014 and maintained it successfully ever since.

The FAI Tanay Mondial 2020 in August last year became the first world meet since 2008 where Arizona Airspeed did not represent the United States and had to watch SDC Rhythm XP trying to challenge the Belgian world champions.

The new Airspeed lineup that came together after the USPA Nationals 2019 won back the U.S. top spot at the next qualification, the USPA Nationals 2021, and this year's world meet in Eloy in October will feature the next showdown between HayaBusa and Airspeed.

DeLand Majik - Airspeed Vertical at the Shamrock Showdown 2002
Awards at the Shamrock Showdown 2012
The new duel for the world's 4-way top spot has its preview at this year's Shamrock Showdown, and the occasion could not fit any better, despite the ongoing obstacles still created by the corona virus crisis. The Shamrock Showdown 2022 will be a celebration of the 20-year anniversary of the event.

The first Shamrock Showdown in 2002 was a result of the regular winter meets of the Florida Skydiving League. Many 4-way teams from the United States and across the planet traveled to Florida in the winter for outdoor training camps, and they used the monthly events for competition practice.

The March meet of the Florida Skydiving League became the most popular one and eventually turned into the Shamrock Showdown. DeLand Majik members Joey Jones and Solly Williams were brainstorming the event name with the National Skydiving League, and the Shamrock Showdown finally had its inaugural event in March 2002.

Several future world champions have launched their new competition season at the Shamrock Showdown, and chances are very good that this year's new 4-way world champions will be one of the two top contenders at the Shamrock Showdown 20 years later.

Still undefeated: Arizona Airspeed at the Shamrock Showdown 2021
It will not be the first time that NMP PCH HayaBusa visit Florida to compete at the Shamrock Showdown. The original lineup made their first trip to Skydive DeLand for the 2005 event and finished in 6th place. It took five years until they would be back for the Shamrock Showdown 2010 to finish 2nd behind the French national team, who would win the world championship title a few months later.

HayaBusa came back to Florida in 2011 and 2012 to meet Arizona Airspeed and prepare for the world meet in Dubai 2012 where they missed a jump-off for their first FAI title by one single point. The Shamrock Showdown 2012 was the last time that HayaBusa competed in Florida.

Ten years after their last visit, the Belgian 4-way world champions will be back for the 20-year anniversary and for the next duel with Arizona Airspeed, three years after the visit at Paraclete XP. Both teams have new lineups, as the NSL News reported with earlier updates, and Airspeed has a 2-year head start with the current lineup.

Arizona Airspeed are still undefeated at the Shamrock Showdown after 12 visits, the first one by Airspeed Odyssey in 2007. HayaBusa are busy bringing new member Neal Willems up to speed, while Airspeed work with new coach Joey Jones to maintain the flawless Shamrock record and win the world championship title on home turf in October. The Shamrock Showdown's 20-year anniversary will be a preview seven months before the world meet. The event is open for other 4-way and 8-way teams.
