She's not a packer but it will be fine
posted Feb 5th, 2021 - Event cancellations are still a part of the current situation. The latest victim of the corona virus crisis was the Dubai International Parachute Championship (6th DIPC), as the NSL News reported yesterday.

Participating in a major international competition takes much larger efforts compared to attending a local or regional meet of the NSL Network. It is also significantly easier for the hosts to respect the guidelines for health safety and security at smaller events.

Thus it was not a big surprise that Eliana Rodriguez and Michelle Karamon were able to offer the local and regional teams and competitors in the Skydive Arizona region the monthly 4-way competition of the Arizona Skydiving League in January.

Three teams used the currently rare opportunity to collect more competition experiences and take advantage of world-class coaching and judging. Results of the meets in Eloy usually include highly valuable 4-way feedback from some of the most experienced 4-way competitors in the world.

AZ Defiance without Jason Jones
Last month, Eliana Rodriguez and Michelle Karamon and the participants had company by current Arizona Airspeed members Christopher Kuhlmann and Mikhail Markine. Christopher Kuhlmann guided a pickup team, She's not a packer but it will be fine, through the four rounds that were completed on the meet day. Mikhail Markine was coaching AZ Defiance.

All team members were experienced 4-way competitors of other west coast teams. Ian Pedowitz had competed with Day 2 at the 4-Way FS Skydiving Championships in October, where David Wybenga was on camera for his team. Ian Pedowitz was back in Eloy with Leg Strap Padding for the ASL December meet.

Jason Jones is one of the earliest AZ Defiance members. He had competed with AZ Defiance at the December meet and stepped back this time for team member Karlee King. In the Packer lineup, he joined forces again with AZ Windfall's Jonathan Perl. Jason Jones had filled an open Windfall slot in November 2019.

Eliana Rodriguez also pointed out that Jason Jones has attended every single meet since she and Michelle Karamon reactivated the Arizona Skydiving League in January 2019: "He's been on different teams but has had 100% attendance for the ASL."

Maybe back for more: Red Turtles
This time, Jason Jones was the opponent for his own team, and AZ Defiance did not really have a chance. Jason Jones had Christopher Kuhlmann in his lineup, who guided the pickup team to a 12.3 average after the four rounds.

AZ Defiance were actually done after two rounds and unfortunate circumstances. Eliana Rodriguez explained that Paul Marstall lost one of his contact lenses on exit and he was not able to continue jumping without them. AZ Defiance eventually turned the meet day into a training session at the SkyVenture Arizona wind-tunnel instead.

Rookie Class team Red Turtles were only two rounds luckier. Eliana Rodriguez added that one of the team members hit the door-frame on exit, and landing became challenging with a compromised shoulder. Worsening wind conditions made landing even increasingly difficult. However, the new team with new ASL competitors completed four rounds.

Kailee Marin and Luis Augilar live in Tucson, and Eliana Rodriguez is hoping to see them back at the future ASL meets. She said that the team improved a lot from jump to jump. Ryan Gregory visited from Portland, Oregon, and he said that he would love to come back soon.
