Did You Know...

... that Kirk Verner and David Grauwels provided up-to-date FAI/ISC information?

FAI/ISC online masterpiece for annual meeting
posted Jan 31st, 2021 - The NSL News recently provided an overview of the topics that would be decided upon at the annual meeting of the International Skydiving Commission (ISC) delegates to the World Air Sports Federation (Federation Aeronautique Internationale - FAI).

The most pressing topic for the Formation Skydiving competition community was probably the FAI Mondial Tanay 2020, which is scheduled to be held this August in Russia.

The agenda for the meeting also included the rotation of the FAI/ISC indoor and outdoor events in the coming years.

The meeting was concluded last weekend, and the NSL News asked two ISC delegates to share their knowledge and feedback with the audience in a new NSL Live Talk conversation.

Kirk Verner (United States) and David Grauwels (Belgium) represent their countries at the FAI/ISC meetings, Kirk Verner in the last ten years, David Grauwels since 2018. They are both members of the Formation Skydiving committee, where international expert delegates are discussing the content for the event-specific agenda.

The FAI/ISC delegates from all across the planet usually meet live at a hosting site after a bidding process. Romania's capital city of Bucharest was supposed to be the meeting place this year. However, the corona virus pandemic crashed the original plans, and the meeting was held online instead.

Kirk Verner said that it was a logistical masterpiece that the FAI/ISC management put together to host the event online. The meeting had to accommodate over 100 participants at times for the plenary sessions, even though the work groups in the committees were much smaller.

However, the delegates came to conclusions that Kirk Verner and David Grauwels explained and discussed yesterday at the latest NSL Live Talk session. They had to accommodate a time difference of six hours between Belgium and the United States, which was easily done by the online experts.

It was the first online NSL Live Talk with Kirk Verner, after several previous live interviews at live events. David Grauwels has been joining NSL Live Talk conversations regularly in the past.

FAI World Air Games in Dubai 2015
The most important information for the Formation Skydiving community was probably the confirmation of the schedule for the next years, including the FAI Mondial 2020 in August this year. There are still a few obstacles that need to be overcome, including the still existing restrictions due to the corona virus pandemic, and the Russian situation in the WADA doping affair.

Host and FAI/ISC are ready to host the event as planned in Tanay, as well as the other world meets and world cups in 2022 (indoor world cup in Belgium - outdoor world meet in Eloy), 2023 (indoor world meet in Slovakia - outdoor world cup in Norway), with the next outdoor world meet in 2024.

The NSL News mentioned earlier that the rotation of the world meets changed once in the history of the sport (2003 - 2004), which caused two consecutive years with outdoor world meets. Kirk Verner remembered the reason for the change. He said that FAI/IPC tried to synchronize the world meet with the World Air Games 2004 to become a part of the larger event. It did not materialize in 2004, and the next World Air Games were held in 2009 in Italy, then in Dubai 2015.

Kirk Verner also remembered the one and only event when he and David Grauwels were on the same leaderboard. The NSL News will follow up on this special event...
