Did You Know...

... that Niklas Hemlin is working with the two new Golden Knights 4-way lineups?

Airspeed XP8 and Golden Knights together at Paraclete XP
posted Sep 26th, 2020 - The NSL News mentioned in the coverage of Matt Davidson's indoor comeback that not everything went according to the training plans. The weather situation had not allowed any outdoor training, and visiting substitute Craig Girard was training with Airspeed XP8 only in ParacleteXP's 16-foot flying chamber.

The next surprising event during the Airspeed XP8 training camp was Matt Davidson's 8-way comeback with his team, which was only possible due to the change from outdoor to indoor training. Matt Davidson is not ready yet for outdoor training, which he plans to restart probably in December.

The next surprise for the NSL News was a training camp of the Golden Knights at Paraclete XP that added unexpected content and footage to the most recent visit. The Golden Knights' complete 8-way team, including Matt Davidson's wife Jennifer, was in the windtunnel when the Airspeed XP8 member had his comeback in a few flying sessions with the active lineup.

It was only Airspeed XP8 who were training the 8-way dive pool in the flying chamber. The Golden Knights had broken down their 8-way team once again in two 4-way lineups. Team captain Andrew Starr and his team mates Jennifer Davidson and Jeshue Stahler had explained during NSL Live Talk on February 14th that the Golden Knights long-term training plan begins with a lot of 4-way and skills training.

Golden Knights debriefing with Niklas Hemlin
The Golden Knights' indoor training on the same day was a nice surprise, and the earlier NSL-TV Unfiltered video of Airspeed XP8 included a few clips of it. It became even more promising when team captain Andrew Starr mentioned that his team was scheduled for outdoor training on the following Monday (21st of September).

The training camp was supposed to take place at the Maxton airport, home DZ of the Golden Knights, not far from Raeford, and Andrew Starr invited the NSL News to visit there too. However, once again the plan changed when strong winds terminated the outdoor training shortly after it began on Monday morning.

The whole Golden Knights delegation, including coaches Niklas Hemlin and Matt Davidson, reacted quickly and copied the Airspeed XP8 procedure of switching to indoor training instead. The training plan still did not change, and the Golden Knights split up the 8-way team into the same 4-way lineups as they did the week before.

Niklas Hemlin and Matt Davidson are both working together on the Golden Knights project. Matt Davidson has been helping his former team ever since he left the U.S. Army. Andrew Starr explained that they now added Niklas Hemlin to the staff, as his team's main focus is on 4-way anyway, and both are also 8-way experts with Airspeed XP8 at the same time.

Golden Knights Gold and Golden Knights Black at the Paraclete XP Indoor Championship 2020
8-way gold together in 1997: Eric Heinsheimer (top left) and Matt Davidson (bottom left)
Niklas Hemlin and Matt Davidson have recently been very closely connected. They were piece partners in Arizona Airspeed's 4-way lineup when Matt Davison stepped in for a few months after point Ari Perelman left the team. Then Niklas Hemlin, Mikhail Markine and Matt Davidson continued together with Airspeed XP8, where Niklas Hemlin and Matt Davidson will be piece partners again as soon as Matt Davidson will be back in the lineup.

In fact, they had their first piece-flying experiences together when Matt Davidson had his indoor comeback. Niklas Hemlin is now in charge to bring all Golden Knights up to 4-way speed and skills before the real 8-way training begins.

The lineups of the two Golden Knights 4-way teams have changed since both competed at the Paraclete XP Indoor Championship 2020 in February. The Gold team continues with Jennifer Davidson, Andrew Starr and Jesse Stahler. They now have 8-way videographer Andy Sippl in the lineup who was filming the Golden Knights 8-way team at the USPA Nationals 2019 and is now aiming at a slot in the active lineup. There is an open slot since Jon Clavenger left the team. The new Black lineup consists of David Flynn, Reese Pendleton, Rico Sifuentes and Nik Grimm.

There was another former Golden Knights member at Paraclete XP when the team was training on Monday. Eric Heinsheimer was visiting for work as a pilot and met Matt Davidson to watch the Golden Knights, while Niklas Hemlin was working with the 4-way teams in the flying chamber. Eric Heinsheimer and Matt Davidson won FAI 8-way gold medals together in 1997, and both of them had their 4-way slots in separate lineups between 2000 and 2008.
