Did You Know...

... that NMP PCH HayaBusa is back in outdoor training action?

NMP PCH HayaBusa training at Paranodon Illertissen
posted Jun 18th, 2020 - It was at the end of March when the reigning 4-way indoor and outdoor world champions, NMP PCH HayaBusa, exited a jump plane the last time. They were at Skydive City in Florida for a spring training camp. They barely made it back home to Belgium before travel restrictions and other implications of the corona virus crisis brought Formation Skydiving training and competition to a complete halt.

The FAI Mondial 2020 was canceled and rescheduled for August 2021 a few weeks after NMP PCH HayaBusa arrived back home. The team discussed the new situation and soon came to the conclusion that they will go ahead with the change in the lineup much sooner than they had planned. The NSL Live Talk with all team members on May 18th revealed more details and insights of the new and unexpected situation.

David Grauwels, original team member, inside center and 4-way world champion of 2014, 2016 and 2018, is switching to the camera slot a year earlier than planned, and new member Michele Silvi takes HayaBusa's driver's seat as soon as the team would be back in action.

However, it would still take a while until the real 4-way training, with all team members at the same place and time, could begin. The corona crisis restrictions kept the Belgians from any 4-way training activities. The NSL News update on June 3rd was showing Andy Grauwels still in 1-way action only.

NMP PCH HayaBusa training at Paranodon Illertissen
NMP PCH HayaBusa mentioned during the NSL Live Talk in May that Belgium was not ready to restart any athletic activities any time soon.

In fact, they were hoping to get travel permission from their military headquarters if other countries in Europe would reopen skydiving centers and windtunnels earlier than in their homeland.

It was Skydive Paranodon in Illertissen, Germany, that was back in operation while Belgium was still locked down for 4-way training. NMP PCH HayaBusa applied for the permission to travel to Germany and finally exited from the Cessna Caravan in Illertissen, almost three months after their last training jump in Florida.

Today's first training jump was the first one with the new lineup, and new team videographer David Grauwels provided the video footage of the special occasion, with Michele Silvi in his former slot.

It was probably challenging for David Grauwels to focus on the camera job, while his former team mates exited with the new lineup. He would have lost a few points in a judging room in the first training jump, however, three jumps later he kept everything in frame, from exit to the end of the 35 seconds of working time and to break-off.

NMP PCH HayaBusa brought the whole team delegation to Germany for the very new beginning, except father Alex Grauwels, who usually never misses an important HayaBusa event.

World champion videographer of 2018, Luc Van Britsom, traveled to Germany with the team. He is coaching David Grauwels to the secrets and details of the camera slot. He actually covered the first six of the ten jumps that the team completed on Thursday. David Grauwels then took over and filmed the 4-way action in the remaining four training jumps.

HayaBusa also asked coach Gary Smith to work with the team at the first training camp after the corona break. Gary Smith has been coaching the Belgian world champions since 2013 and guided them to their first world championship title in Prostejov 2014. He helped them to defend the 4-way outdoor title twice in 2016 and 2018.

Gary Smith was there to help with the personnel change when Jeroen "Bob" Nollet replaced Roy Janssen successfully at the end of the 2014 season. The lineup did not change between 2015 and 2019. Now the coach has to find again the best way how to integrate Michele Silvi into his new inside center slot. Videographer David Grauwels will be able to assist Gary Smith with all the slot knowledge that a 3-time inside center world champion has available...
