Did You Know...

... that the HF Cubs won the Flyspot Polish Open 2019?

AAA Class awards at the Flyspot Polish Open 2019
posted Nov 24th, 2019 - The NSL News just reported on November 17th how the Czech HF Cubs skipped the 24-average level and posted a 25.0 average at the November competition of the World Tunnel League at the Hurricane Factory.

Just a few weeks later, Jan Klapka traveled with a Czech 4-way delegation to the Flyspot Katowice wind tunnel in Poland to attend this year's Polish Open indoor competition. His delegation consisted of the HF Cubs, who competed in the AAA Class, and his best two 4-way Junior teams, HF Flying Rebels and HF Dragonflies.

The two 4-way Junior teams competed in the AA Class, which is identical with the newest FAI/IPC category that was officially introduced at the FAI Indoor World Cup 2016. The Czech 4-way juniors posted their scores on the AA Class leaderboard together with all other AA Class teams of 4-way seniors and of any gender-combinations.

The HF Cubs will compete in 4-way Women at the coming FAI/IPC events and joined all 4-way Open Class teams on the AAA Class leaderboard at the Polish Open.

AA Class awards at the Flyspot Polish Open 2019
This time, the HF Cubs skipped the 26-average level and finished with a 27.4 in Katowice. The NSL News mentioned in the same earlier update from the Hurricane Factory that a 26+ average or even higher can probably be expected for the team's first 4-way Women competition at the FAI Indoor World Cup in April next year.

It happened much earlier, although the 27.4 in Poland does not reflect the Cubs' current performance level realistically. All participating teams had the opportunity to boost their meet averages with a real Super Sequence in Round 4 (B-C-F-G-L) and the HF Cubs took full advantage with the 45-pointer highscore.

It surely was not an easy sequence of only random formations, as it included the Cataccord (G) and the Adder (L) at the end of the sequence. However, any five random formations in one round generate significantly higher scores compared to sequences with blocks and piece-flying.

At least, the HF Cubs still confirmed their 25+ scoring level. The average of the nine rounds without the Super Sequence is at 25.4 and the Cubs are probably very close to the 26+ level.

HF Dragonflies and HF Flying Rebels at the Flyspot Polish Open 2019
International judging panel at Flyspot Katowice
The Polish national team in 4-way Women, No Mercy, copied their 21.9 average at the FAI Indoor World Meet 2019, and the second Polish all-female senior team, Flyspot One2Three, finished just as far behind the very young Czech ladies as No Mercy did. Not even the Russian 4-way Open Class team Thunder, with player-coach Sergey Shenin, were able to get anywhere close to the HF Cubs, despite a new 25.4 team record average.

The competition was much more exciting in the AA Class, where the HF Dragonflies posted their first 20+ average and outscored their Czech 4-way junior rivals, the HF Flying Rebels, for the third time this year. The Flying Rebels had won the three World Tunnel League meets in February, March and November.

It was an exciting competition in the AA Class, as five of the six teams posted highscores in different rounds and were separated by only nine points. Another Polish all-female lineup (Ladies Power) took the 1st place on the AA leaderboard, and the Czech lineup with the four female Dragonflies gave up the 2nd place to MAD Team only after an extra round for a tie-break. The Flying Rebels missed the extra round by one single point, after a record number of 20 point deductions.

The international judging panel at Flyspot Katowice did not make it easy for the participating teams. None of the 17 teams were able to maintain a clean score sheet throughout the whole 10-round meet...
