Did You Know...

... that the teams are still on a weather hold in Europe?

Sven Ibens with Hayabusa in 2006
posted Sep 8th, 2007 - The same scores of the ESL Championship 2007 that were already on the leaderboard yesterday are still the last ones from Spa in Belgium.

Hayabusa Defence (AAA), Wingnutz (AA), Sonic V (A) and 4-Play (R) are still on top of the leaderboard, and the Netherlands are leading the ESL Spirit competition.

Former Hayabusa member Sven Ibens manages the event and sent summary of Friday's acivities.

Friday at the ESL Championship 2007

By Sven Ibens

This morning started really grey and cloudy at the Skydive Center Spa. A lot of people were in the hangar doing all sorts of things, but unfortunately, weather did not permit any skydiving.

The cloud base over the dropzone was at around 500 feet. Even according to Belgian standards, that is a bit too low...

...and another one...
In the afternoon it started to become a bit lighter, and the clouds were getting higher. We took the decision to start sending teams up. And yes - we started skydiving. It was indeed good to see the first parachutes in the air.

After this first day of the ESL 2007 Finals I think I can say that we saved the day. I think that most teams are happy that we were able to finish nearly two rounds. Only two teams did not complete the second round, because the weather turned bad again.

New judging system from Finland at the ESL Championship 2007
It is hard to stay focused after a long day of waiting and stand-by’s, but I honestly think that the teams showed great sportsmanship in not letting their heads hang and boarding planes even when most of us thought they were going to come down full of skydivers anyway.

The judging system works smoothly, and the judges did an awesome job in posting scores before teams were called for their next jump. This is amazing with only one judging panel and 31 jumps to judge in 80 minutes.

Well, I believe it is beer time, and I hope that tomorrow we will be able to skydive from 9:00 am till 8:00 pm.
