Did You Know...

... that Evolution won the national championship with a new Canadian record average?

Canada's 2007 champion, Team Evolution
posted Aug 5th, 2007 - The World Cup 2007 competition in Stupino, Russia, home of the annual Malevsky Cup, begins on Monday morning. No scores have been posted so far. However, other events have happened in the meantime, including the Canadian Naionals 2007.

Skydive Burnaby was the host for the event, and most of the teams that attended the official national championship had already competed at any of the CanAm 2007 events or other 4-way meets before.

Winning the Canadian championship title was only a formality for Team Evolution. The four LeMay members (father Michel with his three sons Matin, Vincent and Benoit) had no serious competition in Canada and posted an 18.7 average after ten rounds with a relatively slow competition draw.

Bronze medals for Synergie
The championship event in Burnaby started on Monday July 30 and was running until August 4. The 4-way competition started late Monday afternoon and was completed on Tuesday. The ten 4-way teams in the AAA/Open Class included three line-ups from Evolution's home, NouvelAir.

Evolution's winning average of 18.7 stands officially for a new Canadian record and beats the previous 16.8 record average of 2005. Synergie, with CanAm Director Donald Poulin, won the bronze medals with a 10.7 average.

Tropical Fish won the Canadian silver medals with exactly the same 13.3 meet average that the team had posted at the July Meet of the California Skydiving League. Tropical Fish prepared for the Canadian Nationals 2007 with a training camp in California. Round 2 of the team's meet in Elsinore is currently featured on NSL-TV.

The Canadian national championship included an exciting race for the status as the national team in IPC's female category. Two line-ups were in contention, the Gravity Girls from Burnaby and NouvelAir's Cat Women.
Cat Women
Both teams had already competed at CanAm meets this year. The Cat Women attended both previous meets in June (2 and 30), posted a 7.5 average after eight rounds on June 2 and could only complete one round on June 30.

The Gravity Girls had finished with an 8.8 average after six rounds on the same weekend.

The competition between the two all-female line-ups last week was as exciting as the previous scores had promised. The Cat Women, assisted by the Evolution members, were up by only two points after eight rounds. They won the last two rounds, as well, and finished six points ahead of the Gravity Girls. The Cat Women will represent Canada at next World Championship of Formation Skydiving in France.

LeMay family juggling
The teams made three rounds on Monday afternoon and completed the meet with the remaining seven rounds on Tuesday between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm. There was a lot of waiting time, and the LeMay family practiced some juggling. Father Michel LeMay has always been attracted to the circus and transmitted the passion to his sons, as well.

Michel LeMay started juggling with a friend when he was still a teenager. Vincent, Benoit and Martin all started juggling when they were kids. They say that it is a great hobby. Martin LeMay explained more: "It helps to increase the eye-hand coordination and also the chemistry in the team."

Next step for the old and new Canadian national team is to establish a training schedule for the upcoming winter training with coach Shannon Pilcher. Evolution plans to do anywhere between 600 and 700 training jumps during the winter from a Pilatus Porter, the jump plane of next year's World Championship of Formation Skydiving in France. The ultimate team goal is a position within the top five next year in Maubeuge, France.
