Did You Know...

... that 100-way teams and 4-way teams follow the same strategy?

Falcon Team exit
posted Nov 24th, 2009 - SkyQuest 2009, with the last 4-way outdoor competition in 2009, is over. Ben Liston's wind tunnel competition at SkyVenture New Hampshire on December 5 will be the last 4-way event this year.

The Kaleidoscope Divers left Florida with a total of 13 jumps from 18,000 feet in four days. The 4-way teams completed all ten rounds after the start on Friday afternoon. The NSL News has a lot of video footage in store, which will be uploaded step by step.

Two of the 100-way Falcon team's jumps were already uploaded earlier, and the first five rounds of the Rookie Class battle for the Aerodyne Cup are already available on NSL-TV, as well. These videos have been embedded in earlier NSL News stories.

Level work by Andrey Veselov
A third jump of the Falcon Team has been embedded in a clip that shows both 100-way teams. The Falcon Team is in the air, while the Eagle Team members wait on the ground for the planes to come back down to pick them up.

Of course, both 100-way teams were always observing the freefall action and followed the progression of the other team. It was a quite even affair. The Eagle Team had a slower start but caught up quickly with the quality of the Kaleidoscope Dives.

The NSL News has the complete footage of all 100-way jumps. Chief videographer Andrey Veselov provided the videos of all jumps. They will be uploaded in the coming days and weeks.

Falcon Team gets ready for a maneuver

There were no judges and no scores for the unofficial 100-way competition. It was a friendly competition for the best dives with the highest quality. However, there was the desire on both ends to keep up with the other team.

The World Team members - and there were many of them at SkyQuest 2009 - are used to competitive pressure when they try to build their big-way world records. Only one wrong grip at a record attempt makes this one a failure as of setting a new record. The pressure and excitement of a a record attempt or a competition usually brings out the best of any athlete in sports, and even in recreational activities.

There was a similar competitive atmosphere to a certain extend at SkyQuest 2009. Missing a slot or performing roughly were addressed and discussed. The participants wanted everybody to bring the best skills to the table at any time.

Briefing with the team captains
It was still a very low-key competition, and not for points but more for quality. The "judges" were the team captains who assigned penalties to slots that were not flown up to required standards. The penalties were usually following the beer rules...

However, the 100-way teams followed a similar strategy that the top 4-way teams currently apply. 4-way teams move forward whenver there is a critical situation in the flow of the performance. They hope that the flaw may remain undetected or they accept to swallow the 1-point deduction for any infringement.

The 100-way teams often moved forward, as well. The team captains do not always wait for completions. They key incomplete formations and begin with the next maneuver to entertain and challenge the Kaleidoscope Divers who were in their slots. A record attempt would make this big-way strategy impossible. 100-way competition and complete formations or not - there were some beautiful designs in the skies over DeLand. More footage will follow soon.
