Did You Know...

... that Gary Smith has a very busy schedule in Eloy?

Gary Smith with Operation Adler
posted Oct 20th, 2026 - Coach Gary Smith has been putting in long working days at the FAI Outdoor World Championship 2026. One of the most respected coaches in formation skydiving, he has returned to the broader coaching environment after an extended period working exclusively with Qatar’s delegation, where he was responsible for developing the country’s 4-way teams.

Gary Smith and Jérémie Rollett initially worked together with Qatar’s delegation, with Gary Smith focusing on the 8-way team and Jeremie Rollett coaching the 4-way teams. They eventually switched assignments. Jeremie Rollett continues to work with Qatar’s Falcons, who are now challenging the U.S. team at the top of the 8-way leaderboard at Skydive Arizona.

Before taking on his exclusive coaching commitment with Qatar, Gary Smith guided NMP PCH HayaBusa to four world championship titles in 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2021. Jeremie Rollett won his last 4-way world championship gold medal in Menzelinsk 2010 before becoming France’s national formation skydiving coach. He later accepted a coaching position with Qatar, eventually relocating there with his family. He has now lived in Qatar for five years. Gary Smith concluded his coaching work with Qatar after guiding the Qatar Tigers to FAI bronze medals at three consecutive outdoor world championships in 2021, 2022, and 2024. Former HayaBusa member Andy Grauwels has since taken over the coaching role for Qatar’s new national 4-way team, Vortex.

NSL Live Talk: Coaches Corner with Gary Smith on October 19th
Bad landing luck: Amnesya Fly X's Chiara Brunetti
Gary Smith once again took time out of his busy schedule to share his observations and thoughts with the NSL News audience, despite having already completed a long working day. He is involved in all three formation skydiving events — 4-way Open, 4-way Women, and 8-way — and devotes considerable energy to coaching teams that hire him, as well as helping others seeking his advice. He shares his knowledge and experience generously, not only when he is being compensated for his work. Despite his coaching commitments and the additional time he spends with teams and individual competitors, Gary Smith rarely hesitates when the NSL News asks him for feedback or commentary. He is probably the most regular contributor to NSL Live Talk and the Coaches Corner, both at live events and remotely when he is traveling.

At Skydive Arizona, his main responsibilities are once again with NMP PCH HayaBusa, whose members are pleased to have him fully available again following his time with Qatar’s delegation. He is also heavily involved with the German teams. Airbus Illertissen has spent much of its training this year working with Gary Smith, who continues the work previously undertaken by his former teammate and lifelong friend, Silvanus (Solly) Williams. Germany’s 8-way team is also benefiting from Gary Smith’s guidance as it pursues another set of FAI bronze medals. The Dutch teams Out Of The Blue and Funky Falcon are also part of his coaching network.

The NSL News once again managed to get some of Smith’s valuable time in Eloy, this time after nightfall. Meanwhile, the German 4-way Open Class team’s scores have been delayed because of its different schedule, which accommodates the 4-way and 8-way commitments of two team members. The delayed or missing scores for Italy’s Amnesya Fly X are related to Chiara Brunetti’s injury.
