Did You Know...

... that the A/Beginner Class is the biggest winner at the USPA Nationals?

First USPA Beginner Class briefing in 2021
posted Oct 24th, 2025 - The biggest winner of the USPA Nationals 2025 is the A/Beginner Class that USPA included first time in the event format for the national outdoor championships in 2021. The National Skydiving League introduced the A Class in 2000, dive pool and sequences are still the same that they were when the category was launched.

It was the next step to offer 4-way teams a gradual progression from the beginnings of a team career to the complete FAI/ISC dive pool, with currently 22 blocks and 16 random formations. The NSL followed up a few years later with the introduction of the RRR (Rookie) Class, which completed the step-by-step options. The Indoor Cloud League went even further with offering teams and competitors the entry to 4-way competition with the two additional Rookie Class categories (RR - R).

USPA added the identical Beginner Class to the competition format in 2021, and it seemed like the participation dropped slightly after a strong start at the first 4-way Beginner Class competition as a part of the USPA Nationals 2021, also held at Skydive Arizona. Four years later, the 4-way Beginner competition at the same place is showing a field of 13 registered teams on Friday. The A/Beginner Class teams started with six rounds in 2021 and 2022 until USPA upgraded the event to a 10-round competition, which begins on Saturday, together with the other three USPA 4-way events (Open/Advanced/Intermediate).

4-way Beginner awards at the USPA Nationals 2024
CSC Constellation XP is one of the most prominent examples for using the gradual options of 4-way progression year by year carefully and very successfully. Natalie Rodriguez and Russell Bayuk launched the team in the A Class of 2021 and collected competition experiences at the meets of the Midwest Skydiving League. Then they finished in 4th place on the first USPA 4-way Beginner Class leaderboard, after a jump-off round for the bronze medals.

Constellation did not win any medals in 2021 and still decided to make the next step into the AA/Intermediate Class of 2022. The additional eight blocks kept them busy for three years. They finished 11th at the USPA Nationals 2022 and tied in 4th place a year later before winning the USPA gold medals in 2024. Now they move up into the AAA Class world at the upcoming 4-way Advanced Class competition in Eloy, with player-coach Andrew Happick in the lineup.

None of the three 4-way Beginner Class medalists of 2024 have signed up for the same category this year. However, 2024 winner CSC Singularity are back on the 4-way AA/Intermediate Class leaderboard and seem to copy the gradual progression of CSC Constellation XP. AirGo members Hannah and Al Etienne have continued with AA/Intermediate Class team Relentless. Only Jason King is introducing new Skydive City team Door BlockerZ to the A/Beginner Class. Bronze medalist Nadya McDonnell (Toxic Intrusive Thoughts) is a medal contender in the AA/Intermediate Class with Spaceland Toxic this year, together with her husband Demo McDonnell. Six of the 13 teams have at least competition experiences of the 2025 season, mostly at local and regional meets of the NSL 4-way Network.
