Did You Know...

... that the official world record for a single round is still Airspeed's 59-pointer of 2017?

60-pointer in Round 4: Arizona Airspeed
posted Feb 23rd, 2023 - The competition draw of the Paraclete XP Indoor Championship 2023 included a Super Sequence for the 4-way AAA Class teams in Round 4 (M,B,G,E,F) that was randomly drawn for the national indoor championships of the United States.

The scores had no significant impact on the 4-way Open Class leaderboard, as most of the teams performed according to their ranking positions. Only XPG4 and Greenlight scored significantly higher than teams ahead of them in the rankings.

The scores for a Super Sequence can have a much stronger impact, and the situation at the German Outdoor Nationals 2021 is probably still the most dramatic recent example, where the 3-point leader after Round 9 lost the following Super Sequence by 10 points and ended up in 2nd place.

The top teams are usually very well trained for a potentially drawn Super Sequence, physically and mentally, as it can change the outcome of a competition in just one single round. It was an interesting fact at Paraclete XP that the winner by 44 points after Round 10, Arizona Airspeed, scored only two points higher than Golden Knights and Qatar Tigers in Round 4. The reigning world champions actually created the distance in the rounds with more technical sequences.

Super Sequence in Round 4 of the Paraclete XP Indoor Championship 2023
Judging of the Super Sequence at Paraclete XP

Chief Judge Jim Rees, who is also a U.S. delegate to the FAI International Skydiving Commission (ISC) and is active in the organization's Formation Skydiving Committee, pointed out that Arizona Airspeed's 60-pointer in Round 4 beats the highest scoring number in the FAI/ISC records.

Airspeed's 2017 lineup (Niklas Hemlin, Mikhail Markine, Thiago Gomes, Ari Perelman) owns the standing record number after the 59-pointer in the jump-off round with Russia's Black Cat at the FAI Indoor World Championship 2017 in Montreal, Canada.

The judging logistics at the Paraclete XP Indoor Championship are not matching yet the required FAI/ISC standards, even though the judging panel was completely FAI-rated.

The used scoring system at Paraclete XP has not been approved by FAI/ISC yet, and the judging procedures were not consistent with ISC competition rules.

The approved 59-pointer of 2017 is still the official world record for a single round. There have been quite a few higher scoring numbers in the past. However, a world record only becomes official after FAI/ISC approves the procedures applied at one of the sanctioned events.

Indoor Super Sequences between 2007 and 2010 - World Challenge 2011 - World Challenge 2018
66-pointer in 2010: Perris Fury
The highest score for a randomly drawn sequence is still Perris Fury's 66-pointer in Round 2 (J,M,E,D,L) of the World Challenge 2010. It was not really randomly drawn, as event host Paul Meyer had always added one round with only random formations to his 10-round draw at Bodyflight Bedford. Only the five random formations for the Super Sequence were unknown before the competition draw.

The World Challenge dropped the format with one guaranteed Super Sequence after the World Challenge 2012, and the next Super Sequence in Round 5 (9,B,P,A) of the World Challenge 2018 was drawn originally and without any manipulation of the procedures. The event took place one more time in 2019 and was then discontinued.

The most serious manipulation of a competition draw was even more planned compared to the World Challenge. The participating teams at the Weembinamic 2022 did not only know that there would be a Super Sequence in Round 10. They knew months ahead of the event that they would have to perform a specific sequence (P,M,J,E,F) in the final round. It was no surprise that one of the teams (Apix Weembi) managed to post the first 70-pointer in history. FAI/ISC will surely not sanction and approve the Weembinamic format for this Super Sequence, and the official FAI/ISC highscore is still Airspeed's 59-pointer of 2017.
