NSL News Coverage of the FAI Indoor World Cup 2024

Did You Know...

... that The HF Flying Rebels won the final showdown for the world meet slot?

HF Flying Rebels and HF Chameleons at the ISR Grand Prix 2022
posted Jan 18th, 2023 - The Czech 4-way teams have been in full indoor swing since Jan Klapka opened the winter season with the November meet of the Czech Tunnel League. The two 4-way Junior teams, HF Flying Rebels and HF Chameleons, have completed 58 AAA Class rounds in the six meets within the same time frame, and the two Czech national 4-way teams, HF Flying Circus (4-way Open) and HF Cubs (4-way Women) are not far behind.

The NSL News reported the situation in the race for the 4-way Junior slot in the Czech delegation for the FAI Indoor World Championship 2023 on 18 December 2022. The HF Chameleons were seven points ahead (748 - 741) for the total of the four meets that both teams had attended by then.

HF Flying Rebels won the December duel (203 - 191) and took back the lead by five points (944 – 939). The national indoor championship last week would become the final showdown between the two FAI medal winners at the FAI Indoor World Cup 2022.

Only one of the two teams would qualify for the indoor world championship in Slovakia, and the Flying Rebels left no doubt who will compete for the Czech Republic in April. Both teams finished with new team record averages, and even the Chameleons are almost exactly at the AAA Class scoring level of the HF Cubs before they won the 4-way Junior title in 2019. However, only one team per country is eligible for world championships, and Jan Klapka selected the Flying Rebels after the convincing 23.3 average performance last week.

Still enough time for a camera smile: HF Cubs in action
In fact, the HF Cubs posted a 23.3 average in the AAA Class at their last competition before winning the 4-way Junior world championship title in Weembi Lille 2019. The HF Flying Rebels now still have more than two months to transition from the 23.3 AAA Class average to AA Class competition. There is obviously a realistic chance that the new Czech national team in 4-way Junior might finish at least on the same 30-average level as the HF Cubs did in 2019.

There is no doubt that the HF Chameleons will keep pushing their 4-way junior friends in the meantime. The duel between the two teams was very productive and generated the top contender for the 4-way Junior competition in Slovakia, where the Flying Rebels will try to defend the HF Cubs gold medals successfully.

The Flying Rebels are actually not only defending the Cubs' FAI gold medals in 4-way Junior. They are also the reigning world cup champions after winning the 4-way Junior competition at the FAI Indoor World Cup 2022 with the 28.1 average in April last year. The HF Cubs are in the same situation. They won at the same event in 4-way Women and would win their second world championship title, after the 4-way Junior gold in 2019. At least NFTO and France will try to interfere with the Czech plans.

HF Cubs and HF Flying Circus both compete with exactly the same lineups who attended the world championship in 2019 and the world cup in 2022, while the Flying Rebels had one change at the beginning of the 2022/2023 indoor season. The consistency of the Czech 4-way delegation maintains the status of an international indoor powerhouse.

The two sets of FAI gold medals in the horizontal 4-way events at Weembi Lille 2019, plus the Top 10 position of Flying Circus, made the Czech delegation the most successful nation at the event. They confirmed and even improved the results in Charleroi last year, and the run-up to this year's FAI event is promising for Jan Klapka.

The two senior national teams are well prepared, as well. The HF Cubs completed their 4th indoor competition since November at the open national championship, and they are gaining momentum and quality meet by meet. HF Flying Circus have five meets behind them since November, and they are close to their 6th place level (26.0) in April last year. The Czech delegation for the indoor world championship seems to be ready, with more than two months of additional time available for the final preparations.
