Did You Know...

... that the Moravian teams have a third indoor option?

Three indoor options for Czech teams
posted Nov 29th, 2022 - The NSL News mentioned during earlier coverage of the Czech Tunnel League and Indoor Cloud League events at the Hurricane Factory that not all training camps of the 4-way junior teams take place in Prague.

Czechoslovakia used to be spread out widely from west to east before the country split up into the Czech Republic and Slovakia in 1993. Both countries now have Hurricane Factory windtunnels, one in Prague, the other one in Tatralandia, host of the FAI Indoor World Championship 2023.

Indoor fliers in the eastern region of the Czech Republic (Moravia) have a third option that reduces their travel distances significantly. They train regularly at the Flyspot Katowice windtunnel in Poland, host of the Flyspot Open 2022.

The third option for the Czech teams became more defined when HF Flying Circus member Martina Vavackova became more involved assisting Jan Klapka with his 4-way junior project. She began traveling regularly to the eastern part of the Czech Republic to work with the Moravian teams, while Jan Klapka had more than enough work with all of his Czech teams in the Prague area (Bohemia). There are currently four Czech teams who live in the northern part of Moravia and cross the border with Poland to train at Flyspot Katowice: Moravian Cats, Moravian Flyers, Panthers, Smajlici.

Moravian 4-way seniors and juniors in 2020
The Czech teams still meet each other regularly, sometimes at the events in Prague, recently for the competition at Flyspot Katowice. There were a total of seven Czech 4-way teams competing at the Flyspot Open 2022, including three of the four Moravian teams.

The NSL News update on 5 January 2021 explained some of the family relationships between and within the four Moravian teams, including mothers and fathers, bothers and sisters of the junior team members. Panthers, formerly known as the Smajlici 1 lineup, and Smajlici 2, are the two 4-way junior teams. The Moravian Flyers have a male lineup with some fathers, Moravian Cats a female lineup with some mothers, and the sons and daughters are in the junior lineups.

All four teams were formed at about the same time (2020) and the adults were ahead at the beginnings in the Rookie Class, usually with the Moravian Flyers outscoring the Moravian Cats.

Parents and coaches (Martina Vavackova, Jan Klapka) eventually decided to select the older juniors for the Smajlici 1 lineup, the younger ones for Smajlici 2. The members of the Smajlici 1 lineup recently decided that they wanted their own team name and changed to Panthers.

HF Flying Circus did not compete at the Flyspot Open, and coach Martina Vavackova was able to fill an open slot for the Moravian Cats, who have been looking for a new team member in the point slot. Lucie Lednik had joined the team last spring and had to withdraw due to a shoulder injury.

The Moravian Cats don't know yet whether Lucie Lednik will be able to come back or not. Martin Kolek's wife Petra may join the team as her husband's opponent, who is in the Moravian Flyers lineup. Martina Vavackova has been helping out in the meantime and guided the Moravian Cats to the 3rd place, ahead of the Moravian Flyers.

However, both senior teams could not get anywhere close to the junior Panthers in their first A Class competition. The 14.5 average is almost on the same scoring level where the team was in their last Rookie Class competition in May.

Martina Vavackova was compensated for her A Class performance when she was invited for a few extra rounds after the conclusion of the competition. The two Italian FLYX world-class competitors in Katowice, Arianna de Benedetti and Marco Arrigo, joined forces with NMP PCH HayaBusa member Michele Silvi and offered HF Flying Circus' outside center the tail slot. Martina Vavackova did not need her team suit, as this "Team for a Few Minutes" decided to enter the flying chamber without much preparation or jumpsuits...
