Did You Know...

... that Arizona Airspeed's Niklas Hemlin provided details of the British judging situation?

First British championship title: Chimera
posted Sep 1st, 2022 - The first update from the British Outdoor Nationals 2022 on August 29th mentioned that Chimera coach Niklas Hemlin was live at the competition site, and that he would have more feedback of the judging situation at the British outdoor championships.

Niklas Hemlin had brought unusual marks on the scoresheets to the NSL News attention. Point deductions due to "Camera angle/grip visibility" are nothing unusual. It was the placement of the penalties that caught the attention of the highly experienced 4-way competitor and coach.

Arizona Airspeed and Niklas Hemlin have arrived at the competition site of the USPA Nationals, beginning next week at Skydive Chicago, for the last training camp. Niklas Hemlin followed up with information from the British Outdoor Nationals and his feedback on the morning of Airspeed's first training day.

His team is planning a light week of 4-way training with five or six jumps per day and get used to the rhythm and turnaround times at the major championship events. The training schedule of not only the top teams is usually very different and significantly faster and shorter compared to the logistics at a championship event.

Another Chimera score sheet with same penalties
Niklas Hemlin provided some feedback and commentary of the other two national championships in Europe last week, France and Italy, where opponents of the British national team in 4-way Open, Chimera, posted their most current scores.

He pointed out that it is not only the different competition draws at the different events that makes it difficult to compare the scores, even though the 10-round averages at least indicate the scoring and performance level well enough for a rough preview.

He said that the judging can also be very different on the national level, before the most experienced and skilled judges will be invited to the international FAI/ISC championship events. The situation that Chimera found themselves in at the British Outdoor Nationals could be very different at the outdoor world meet.

Niklas Hemlin explained in detail what was going on at Skydive Hibaldstow, where he was witnessing the first championship title for Chimera. The NSL Live Talk conversation on Zoom Thursday morning included a lot of technical information that could be valuable for any teams to learn. One of the conclusions is the fact that teams have to earn trust by the judges to score a point that might be in doubt. However, Chimera is one of the cleanest teams in the 4-way world, after working with Niklas Hemlin for a while. That was one of the reasons why the coach was surprised by the unusual penalty marks.
