Did You Know...

... that Stephane, Tom and Noe Mattoni competed in the same lineup this time?

posted Jun 8th, 2022 - Most of the teams who attended the FAI Indoor World Cup at the beginning of April transitioned to outdoor training and competition after the event. Especially the national outdoor teams had to begin with their preparations for the national championships and then representing their respective countries at the FAI Outdoor World Meet in October.

Arizona Airspeed (United States), NMP PCH HayaBusa (Belgium), HF Flying Circus (Czech Republic), Papea Masculino (Spain), Out of the Blue (Netherlands), Echochamber Oceanside (Sweden), Amnesya (Italy), INIT-Y (Brazil), Windabona Black Mantis (Austria) alone would create an interesting 4-way Open Class leaderboard at Skydive Arizona.

Nephtys (France), Piteraq members Petra Jastram and Linda Koeb (Germany), Italy's female CISM lineup and Fatal Four will and could also compete in Eloy in 4-way Women.

Most of the outdoor national teams at Airspace Charleroi confirmed that the transition to outdoor training and competition would begin right after the indoor world cup. However, there was still an additional indoor competition scheduled, and it took place only little over an hour of driving distance away from Airspace Charleroi. Weembi Lille hosted their FS Cup 2022, and several of the French 4-way and 8-way competitors visited Weembi Lille three weeks after the indoor world cup.

Nephtys - Weembi Unicorns at the Weembi FS Cup 2022
Tom Mattoni (2nd from left) with Monaco Aerokart Ak'demie
The winner of the AAA Class competition at Weembi Lille, the French national indoor and outdoor team Nephtys, was one of the teams at the indoor world cup who could not wait for a day to make the transition to outdoor training. The Nephtys are one of the top contenders for the 4-way Women gold medals at the outdoor world meet in October.

The Nephtys still went back to the same place where they had won the FAI gold medals at the last FAI Indoor World meet in 2019. They could not get anywhere close to their previous indoor scoring level, as their current focus has been exclusively on outdoor training. However, they were still able to hold off Weembi Unicorns with their well trained international lineup of indoor experts.

Alessandra De Rango, Federico Angelotti and player-coach Julien Degen recruited Mathieu Quizy for the event, who actually has been in the middle of the same transition to outdoor training as the Nephtys. He placed second behind Arizona Airspeed in 4-way Open at the FAI Indoor World Cup 2022 with the French Aerokart team, together with Tom Mattoni. French National coach Mathieu Bernier then selected Mathieu Quizy and Tom Mattoni both as members of the new French national 4-way outdoor team, as well.

Mathieu Quizy and Tom Mattoni still parted ways one more time, after joining forces with their outdoor team mates Damien Gouriou and Alban Rumolo. Mathieu Quizy competed with Weembi's Unicorns, while Tom Mattoni had a special assignment for a family project.

The NSL News reported on June 1st that the Mattoni 4-way family competed in three different teams at the indoor world cup. Father Stephane Mattoni has been a member of the Monaco team for many years, while his son Tom Mattoni made his way from 4-way junior training and competition with the Aerokart Ak'demie teams to silver medals in 4-way Open at the indoor world cup and a slot with the French national outdoor team. His brother Noe Mattoni was in the 4-way Junior team at Airspace Charleroi and won his own FAI silver medal.

The Mattoni family then reversed the situation of competing with three different teams to joining forces for the first time in competition at the Weembi FS Cup three weeks after the FAI event. Mathieu Quizy parted ways with his team mate in the French national lineups only when he made a competition round with Weembi Unicorns. He was back to complete the Mattoni lineup for his second set of ten rounds at the event.

It was the second AAA Class competition for 4-way junior Noe Mattoni, the youngest family member. He increased his meet average from 16.1 with the Aerokart Ak'demie juniors at the French Indoor Nationals in March 2022 to 21.3 at the end of April.
