NSL News Coverage of the FAI Indoor World Cup 2024

Did You Know...

... that Dennis Praet, Andy and David Grauwels have tied Philippe Schorno and Eric Fradet?

4th FAI gold medals for Dennis Praet, Andy and David Grauwels
posted Aug 18th, 2021 - Realistically, there was not much of a battle expected in the 4-way Open Class competition of the FAI Tanay Mondial 2020, even though SDC Rhythm XP and Qatar Tigers were both aiming at the gold medal position at the world meet.

NMP PCH HayaBusa had prepared their personnel change very carefully, and new inside center Michele Silvi was ready to fill the open slot that David Grauwels left behind when he stepped back to take HayaBusa's camera slot.

The new lineup indicated already at the NSL Cloud Mondial 2020 what they would be capable of, and they left Arizona Airspeed, SDC Rhythm XP and Qatar Tigers behind quite easily behind after the eleven round of the online outdoor competition.

All four teams competed with their new and identical lineups, the same ones who met each other finally live at Skydive Tanay this month. Only Arizona Airspeed was missing, as only one national team can represent each country at FAI World Championships of Formation Skydiving. Airspeed's Niklas Hemlin, Mikhail Markine and Christopher Kuhlmann were still in Tanay, as well, and they won their first 8-way gold medals at the same event where NMP PCH HayaBusa ran away from the 4-way field.

Scattered score sheet for Round 5
New NMP PCH HayaBusa member Michele Silvi was not only well integrated into the team. He broke all kind of records at his first live outdoor competition with the Belgian world champions of 2014, 2016 and 2018.

The 32.2 average after the first six rounds with the new inside center reminds more on scores of an indoor competition. There are not many teams in the world who have posted 32+ averages in a flying chamber. However, the same outdoor average at the FAI Tanay Mondial 2020 from the left-hand door of L-410 Turbolets cannot really be compared with other 10-round meets, even though there was no Super Sequence in the 10-round draw. Four of the six first sequences offered scoring opportunities.

There is a good chance that the new lineup might have improved the 28.9 average after all ten rounds, however, HayaBusa with David Grauwels still own the highest 10-round average in history, posted at the USPA Nationals 2019. Michele Silvi has to break this scoring record in a 10-round outdoor competition.

The Belgian national championships and this year's USPA Nationals could be the next opportunities, and the new lineup will probably be even better synchronized. A scattered score sheet like the one for Round 5 is very unusual for the world champions, even though the point deductions are also not very much in synch between the judges in the panel.

HayaBusa fun in Tanay
Disregarding the 32.2 average until HayaBusa's next 10-round competition, there is still a record that is unique and impressive in itself. The Belgians have not only increased the distance between themselves and the two other national teams and Tanay medal winners since the NSL Cloud Mondial 2020.

The 24-point lead after Round 6 is the highest difference between the winner and the team in 2nd place in the history of the sport. 20 was the highest number so far, after the dominating French 4-way TAG Team won in Spain 1989 (152 - 132) after ten rounds.

NMP PCH HayaBusa would have additional four rounds to even add to the lead. No team had even just tied the HayaBusa numbers in any of the six rounds, which is unique, as well. A different French lineup had won by 15 points on home turf in Gap 2003. HayaBusa were next in the records with the 11-point win of 2014.

Two of the French 4-way competitors, Philippe Schorno and Eric Fradet, won gold medals at four consecutive world meets (1987 - 1989 - 1991 - 1993). Dennis Praet, Andy and David Grauwels have tied their record now (2014 - 2016 - 2018 - 2020), and they will have the opportunity next year to claim a new record alone. The next world meet will take place on Arizona Airspeed's home turf though, and HayaBusa have never competed in Eloy yet...
