Did You Know...

... that Kinetix defended their 4-way title successfully in Australia?

posted Apr 14th, 2021 - The NSL News reported the results of New Zealand's national 4-way championships on April 1st and mentioned that an update from Australia would follow soon. This year's national championships of New Zealand was the first time since 2017 that the teams did not have to travel to Australia for their own competition.

Australia, on the other side of the Tasman Sea, did not even run a live competition this year. The Australian Parachute Federation decided to host a virtual national championship, the same way how the NSL Cloud Mondial 2020 united teams on the same leaderboard, due to the limitations of the corona virus crisis and the rescheduling of the FAI Tanay Mondial 2020.

The same format was also used later for another 4-way competition in the United States, the Skydiving Nationals 2.0, before the Shamrock Showdown Cloud eventually combined the live event with the online option.

The Australian teams had one week, including both weekends, to perform their ten rounds at one of several hosting locations in Australia. The judges then used the same online program that InTime had developed for the new situation, and which was applied at NSL Cloud Mondial and Shamrock Showdown, as well.

From AAA gold to AAA gold: Kinetix at the Australian Nationals 2020
New Zealand's Parachute Federation (NZPF) still followed through with the plans of running their own live competition, even though teams would not even have to travel this time to be a part of the Australian national championships, and the Australian teams competed at several different locations.

The results of the Virtual Australian Nationals 2021 would still generate the national 4-way champions, despite the unusual circumstances with exits from different jump planes. Only national records would not be recognized officially.

Kinetix, defending national 4-way champions, won their 3rd consecutive Australian AAA Class title without much opposition. It was not the same lineup that had attended five competitions in 2019, including the USPA Nationals and the FAI Outdoor World Cup. Gary Nemirovsky replaced original member Russ Blackman this year.

Gary Nemirovsky is a former member of the previous Australian national 4-way team, Rotor Out. He was in the team's 2017 lineup, a year before Rotor Out fended off the Kinetix challenge without him at the Australian Nationals 2018 and then competed at the FAI Outdoor World Meet 2018 on Australian home turf.

From RRR gold to A gold: Bellas at the Australian Nationals 2020
AA Class team Halcyon won their first championship title, after two 2nd places in 2019 and 2020, the first one in the A Class of 2019, followed by the 2nd place in the AA Class last tear. This year's 10.4 almost matched the 10.6 in the A Class of 2019 and beat last year's 8.7 in the AA Class easily.

The all-female Bellas won the A Class competition after gold medals in the Rookie Class last year. They moved up to compete in the A Class, where they took on two teams who came back in the A Class (Spinny Things, What's Next). Spinny Things defended the bronze medals successfully in a significantly larger A Class field (8 - 13).

An even larger expansion of the 4-way field at the online championship happened in the Rookie Class. The Bellas had two Rookie Class opponents at the national championships last year. A total of nine teams competed in the same category this year, and Blasted Wings won with a 12.7 average after ten rounds.
