Did You Know...

... that USPA introduces the A Class category to the national championships?

FAI/ISC delegate Kirk Verner
posted Mar 13th, 2021 - The Saturday at the Paraclete XP Indoor Championship 2021 was a very busy day for Kirk Verner, as the NSL News reported on February 27th. He had to complete 24 rounds with four different 4-way and 8-way teams. The ten rounds with Airspeed XP8 were his most important assignment.

Steve Hubbard, USPA's Director of Competition, had an easier agenda, even though he was competing at Paraclete, as well. He had signed up with a pick-up team for the 4-way competition in the AA/Intermediate Class.

Kirk Verner and Steve Hubbard did not end up on the same leaderboard, as Kirk Verner's two 4-way teams (XP4 - Lightspeed) both competed in 4-way Open, and Steve Hubbard skipped the 8-way event. However, they have other things in common, which are related to outdoor competition.

Kirk Verner is also a USPA National Director and chairs the USPA Competition Committee, and he represents the United States Parachute Assciation as the FAI/ISC Delegate.

USPA is responsible only for outdoor competition, while FAI/ISC sanction indoor competition, as well. United States Indoor Skydiving (USIS) represent the United States at the FAI/ISC meetings and events.

NSL Live Talk with Steve Hubbard and Kirk Verner at the Paraclete XP Indoor Championship 2021 - Podunk Hopscotch Mafia
8-way competitor Kirk Verner with Airspeed XP8
USPA's Kirk Verner and Steve Hubbard both competed at the annual indoor competition at Paraclete XP, which was the second USIS national championship at the same time.

They have also been on Paraclete XP's team for Indoor Cloud League events, Kirk Verner as a regular player-coach, while Steve Hubbard recently joined and posted some of the monthly highscores.

Steve Hubbard goes back to the early years of the Indoor Cloud League in Florida, where he was in ICL lineups on a regular basis at the old 12-foot SkyVenture Orlando wind-tunnel. Her has moved to the Paraclete XP area and is back in 4-way action, now in the 16-foot flying chamber.

Kirk Verner and Steve Hubbard had good USPA outdoor news for the audience on that busy Saturday. They found some time together for NSL Live Talk when Kirk Verner was not in the flying chamber or preparing for competition rounds with his four teams.

They informed the NSL News that USPA decided to add another competition category to the national outdoor championships, which will be identical with the A Class of the National Skydiving League's 4-way network.

Steve Hubbard has been familiar with the A Class when he trained competed in Florida years ago. The 4-way category was introduced by the National Skydiving League at the Shamrock Showdown 2002, and it became popular in the international NSL Network very quickly.

The A Class dive pool consists of all 16 random formations (A - Q) and adds the first eight blocks with a diversified variety of different piece-flying opportunities to the 3- or 4-point sequences. It was created to provide the next step after the Rookie Class (RRR) dive pool with only random formations.

The eight blocks (2,4,6,7,8,9,19,21) are more than enough new maneuvers for a team to be trained and mastered in a year after stepping up from the Rookie Class. The next step after the A Class brings the next eight blocks (1,11,13,14,15,18,20,22) in 4- or 5-point sequences with the AA/Intermediate Class. The last step is the AAA Class dive pool for the 4-way Open and Advanced Class teams, which adds all six slot-switchers and B-slot training to the 4-way teams.

Rules and dive pools for the AAA/Open/Advanced and the AA/Intermediate categories have been synchronized for many years between USPA and NSL, and the recent introduction of the A Class at USPA Nationals allows and encourages more teams to visit the national championships after learning and training the A Class dive pool throughout the year.
