Did You Know...

... that Qatar's Formation Skydiving teams are back in training and competition action?

Arizona Airspeed exit at the NSL Cloud Mondial 2020
posted Oct 16th, 2020 - The three Qatar coaches, Gary Smith (Tigers), Luc Verstrepen (Cheetahs) and Marin Ferre (Lions), had good news when they accepted a new invitation for NSL Live Talk and were available for an online conversation during a wind-hold at their recent training camp at Skydive Algarve in Portugal.

The fact that the three 4-way teams were training in Portugal means that Qatar's Formation Skydiving delegation is past the total isolation that they were in for several months. The teams had to stay in Qatar where they can neither jump from planes nor train in a windtunnel.

Gary Smith said that Qatar's 8-way team, the Falcons, had also just completed a training camp in Spain with their French coach Jeremie Rollett. It became even better when he added that the Qatar Tigers were just two rounds short of completing the eleven rounds of the NSL Cloud Mondial 2020. He said that videographer Pavel Skotak will upload the complete set of videos in the coming days.

Several teams have already submitted the eleven videos, including NMP PCH HayaBusa and Arizona Airspeed, and the leaderboard will feature the highest current level of 4-way competition in the world. The NSL Cloud Mondial leaderboard, with the videos of eleven rounds that are exhausting the complete FAI dive pool, will be posted as soon as all rounds are judged by InTime after the deadline of October 25th.

NMP PCH HayaBusa exit at the NSL Cloud Mondial 2020
The NSL Cloud Mondial leaderboard features the national teams of the countries that were in and close to the medal positions at the FAI Outdoor World Meet 2018 in Australia, two years after the previous world meet, and at about the same time when the next World Championship of Formation Skydiving would have taken place.

The competition for the medal positions might be even tighter than it was in October 2018, when NMP PCH HayaBusa and Arizona Airspeed were alone in their duel for the gold medals.

Both teams will probably copy the 2018 battle, while SDC Rhythm XP will try to be as close as possible to the Belgian world champions, who they will challenge for the top spot at the FAI Mondial 2020 in Tanay next year.

The French national 4-way team won the bronze medals in Australia 2018, and it will be extremely difficult to defend the 3rd place successfully against the 4-way experts on the NSL Cloud Mondial leaderboard.

France has put all resources into 8-way training, and the Qatar Tigers have a golden opportunity next year to win the first set of FAI 4-way medals for Qatar if they can outscore the French 4-way Open Class team. The Qatar Falcons won the first FAI medals for their country with the 3rd place in 8-way in Australia.

Over a decade together: Qatar Tigers
Gary Smith said that the Qatar Tigers were not very well prepared for the NSL Cloud Mondial, as they had just resumed training after the long isolation in Qatar, and they began mainly with their A-slots. The NSL Cloud Mondial draw is a very challenging one. The six slot-switching blocks (3,5,10,12,16,17) appear in six different sequences, and eight of the eleven sequences have a block maneuver for exit and sub-terminal phase.

However, the Qatar Tigers are the only team on the top level with the same lineup, compared to the FAI World Meet 2018. In fact, the Tigers have been together for over a decade, as the NSL News explained on 23 December 2019. NMP PCH HayaBusa, SDC Rhythm XP, Arizona Airspeed and the French 4-way Open Class teams all have new lineups who will post their first outdoor scores and videos on the NSL Cloud Mondial leaderboard.

The circumstances for each team have been different during the corona virus pandemic, and the jump planes are different too. However, at least the competition draw is the same across the board, and the leaderboard will provide positions of the teams at this point in time and on the road to the FAI Mondial next year.

German 4-way team Airbus is in the same situation as Arizona Airspeed and will not compete for their country next year in Russia. However, the NSL Cloud Mondial leaderboard is open for all teams, and Airbus can compare their scores with the Dutch national team Out of the Blue, who finished behind the previous Airbus lineup in Australia.
