NSL News Coverage of the FAI Indoor World Cup 2024

Did You Know...

... that Finland's Pro Team balances the slot-switchers differently?

30 rounds with 26+ averages since June: Pro Team
posted Dec 6th, 2019 - NSL-TV is following up on the November meet of the Finnish Tunnel League League with the meet videos of the three AAA Class teams.

The videos are showing the third 26+ meet of Finland's Pro Team since the 24.6 finish at the FAI Indoor World Meet 2019, which was just short of the last Top 10 position. The current 26+ performance level after 30 competition rounds since June is one of the team's steps on the way to a significantly improved placing at next year's indoor world cup and outdoor world meet.

The video also offers some insights of the Pro Team engineering. Finland's national team is one of the minority of teams who distribute the traditional slot-switching blocks (3-5-10-12-16-17) in a more even balance between front and rear piece.

The front piece is carrying the whole burden of slot-switchers for the majority of teams. Blocks 5 and 17 create memory for both pieces, while the other four blocks (3-10-12-16) switch the slots of the piece partners only in one piece, which is usually the front piece. Of course, each team has the freedom to choose a specific engineering and continuity plan, and the Pro Team has added one of the six specific blocks to the rear piece's agenda.

Pro Team at the WTL November meet

For the Pro Team, it is Block 16 (Compressed Accordion - Box) that creates a slot-switching sequence for the rear piece, instead for the front piece, which is the most popular engineering. This continuity plan makes it a total of three slot-switching situations (5-16-17) for the rear piece, while the front piece is down to the potential of five rounds with memory (3-5-10-12-17) in a 10-round meet where all 22 blocks are drawn.

The traditionally heavy load of memory sequences for the front piece is actually beneficial for outside center and point who get much more practice of the B-slots to master the brain challenges as good as possible. However, the rear piece cannot escape slot-switchers without long "swing moves", as Blocks 5 and 17 create memory sequences for inside center and tail, as well.

Adding another slot-switching block to the rear piece agenda is a productive option, as inside center and tail get more practice for a situation that they have to master anyway whenever Blocks 5 and 17 are drawn for any sequence in a competition.

The memory load between front and rear piece is still out of balance (5 - 3), even with Block 16 on the rear-piece plate.

The other two meet videos from Finland feature the domestic battle between Just4Fun and Blue Steel, which ended with a 7-point difference. The tight competition in Helsinki pushed Just4Fun to the 4th place on the World Tunnel League leaderboard for November. Only the two best Czech teams, HF Cubs and HF Flying Circus, finished ahead of Just4Fun, while the Pro Team took the top spot of the AAA Class leaderboard.

Just4Fun was formed for the 2019 indoor season at the Fööni wind tunnel in Helsinki when Blackjack did not continue this year. League organizer Vesa Vuorenkoski joined Just4Fun, while his original team mate Matthew Iles found former Tempo member Jorma Löfgren and Nadja Lönnroth for a new lineup.

Opponents Vesa Vuorenkoski and Matthew Iles go back as team mates to the early 90's. They trained and competed together for Chymos in 1994 and 1995, became one of the top teams in Finland and eventually the 4-way national team for the world meet in 1997.

Vesa Vuorenkoski came out on top this time, and Matthew Iles will try again at the coming meets. Their former Chymos and Blackjack team mate Oscar Salonaho was back in action in November, as well. He won the AA Class competition in Helsinki with Sörkan Laskuvarjourheilijat, who finished behind the two Czech junior teams in 3rd place on the WTL November leaderboard.
