Did You Know...

... that scores and participation went up at Denmark's Indoor Nationals?

Kjetil Nordin for Norway in 2010
posted Oct 10th, 2012 - The Danish skydiving union held their annual Indoor Championships last weekend in Bottrop, Germany. The 4way scoring level was significantly higher than in 2011, and the number of participating teams also went up from nine to eleven. All seven AAA Class teams averaged above the double digit level.

Airplay's player coach Kjetil Nordin, former member of Norway's national 4way team at the World Meet 2010 in Menzelinsk, said that his team's 16.1 average was not even good enough to win a medal. Last year's silver medalist Cute Me placed 2nd with a 15.1 average. Vivas won bronze this year with a 16.6 average. The relatively fast competition draw with all 16 Random Formations and without Blocks 1 and 12 also helped to raise the scoring level.

The competition began on Saturday evening at 7:30 PM and was finished early afternoon on Sunday, which made it a quite intense meet with short turnaround times. Kjetil Nordin said that most of the participants "were pretty sleep deprived while flying". It was made up for with a pretty fast draw, without block 1 and 12, and including all of the randoms.

With outdoor equipment at the indoor competition: Bodyflight Voluntas
AAA Class winner Vol:Danes set a new Danish indoor record with the 21.5 average. National team Bodyflight Voluntas was seriously handicapped, as they went through all ten rounds with containers on their backs. Voluntas is in the middle of the final preparations for the Mondial 2012 in Dubai, and the 18.0 "hybrid average" is an impressive result under the special circumstances.

Airplay and Voluntas were the only teams who competed with the same lineups as at the Danish Nationals 2012 in July. Veyron's female front piece, silver medalists at the national championships, and two members of the Danish Divas, Denmark's national team in the female 4way category, joined forces in Vivas for the meet in Bottrop.

The competition for the bronze medals last weekend was almost as exciting as at the Nationals. AirPlay and Vivas tied their scores in five of the ten rounds, whilst each team won two rounds by a single point. The 5-point difference in Round 2 was the winner of the bronze medals for for Vivas.

Airplay at the Copenhagen Air Experience
Kjetil Nordin reported some additional interesting twists in the field and in the lineups at the event:

"The 5th place was awarded to a brand new team consisting of the staff from the Danish 12-foot wind tunnel Copenhagen Air Experience. They had only been training in their home tunnel before the competition, and needless to say for those who have tried it: Flying 4way in a 12-foot tunnel requires some skills."

"Their excellent basic skills, and lack of respect for vertical moves made them deadly in some blocks and rounds, and they tied with the bronze medal winners and the 4th place team several times. They might have had the best Block 6's of the entire field of teams, and with a little more training they could definitely become a candidate for medals in future events."

Mads Jensen with Contrails
He added that two other 2012 teams, Contrails and Blue Motion, also had some of their members in the competition:

"Team Schwarzwalder Kirsch was composed of current and former project team jumpers, among them Mads Jensen from Contrails, and Stefan Rosenberg from Veyron. Stefan was never close to competing against his team mates in Vivas, but the competition between Mads and his two former team mates of team Con:Motion was very exciting at times. Schwarzwalder Kirsch eventually beat Con:Motion, but the latter team's average of 12.0 is a big improvement from Contrails and Blue Motion scores at earlier tunnel meets."

The A Class competition for the gold medals was also exciting. Kjetil Nordin said that VAF igen had a serious crash in Round 3, which cost them the gold medals: "The winners of Team Retro felt that they probably would have been beat if it wasn't for that head-banger, so they decided to show great sportsmanship, and they donated their sponsored prize from Bev Suits to the younger team."
