Did You Know...

... that Spa Hayabusa scored a 45-pointer at the BST meet last weekend?

posted May 1st, 2006 - The NSL News story on March 1 covered the current situation of the Belgium national 4-way team Spa Hayabusa. David Grauwels, Andy Grauwels, Sven Ibens and Roy Janssen had just won the annual wind tunnel competition in Paris, France, with impressive scores.

The NSL News used the opportunity in March to take a closer look at the Belgian team and its progression in the past years. Headline and conclusion of the story was that Spa Hayabusa is aiming for 4-way medals at this year's World Championship of Formation Skydiving in Germany.

The Belgium team put additional evidence behind the words last weekend. The Belgium Skydiving Trophy, one of the 4-way leagues in Europe, held its first competition of the 2006 season, and Spa Hayabusa attended the meet. The details of the event, including competition draw and all scores, have not been posted yet.

However, the news of another great Hayabusa performance arrived early enough at the NSL headquarters. The competition draw in Belgium included a very fast sequence of only random formations in round one of the competition: J-O-A-H-F. Spa Hayabusa completed 47 points within working time, lost two points due to one video issue and one infringement and ended up with a 45-pointer on the scoreboard.

Team member Roy Janssen said that official judges were on site. Meet management, judges and Spa Hayabusa will send the the jump and the scoresheet to the IPC Formation Skydiving Committee in an effort to get offical FAI recognition as a new 4-way world record. The NSL News story on March 20 had explained the current status of the 4-way world record.

Hayabusa could have done even better, as Roy Janssen explained: "We lost a bit on the hill. I guess a 49-pointer was possible if we did a clean jump. We were busted on one video on the hill and one other bust. Unfortunately, we lost additional points on video..."

The meet in Belgium was held over six rounds, and Spa Hayabusa finished with a 21.3 meet average, a new team record. The NSL News will follow up with more details of the whole competition and the video of the record jump as soon as possible.
