Did You Know...

... that Thyra won the next FAI medals for Norway?

4-way Women awards of the outdoor world cup
posted Sep 11th, 2023 - The NSL News coverage of the 23rd FAI World Cup of Formation Skydiving is far from over, even though other events keep happening during the aftermath of the competition at Skydive Voss in Norway.

National championships in Germany, Great Britain, Belgium and Netherlands were taking place shortly after the outdoor world cup, and more Formation Skydiving events will come up very soon, including Canada, France and the United States. Most of them relate to the outdoor world cup, where the best 4-way and 8-way teams of participating countries meet for international competition.

In fact, the 7-team field in 4-way Women at Skydive Voss featured only one single team that had the national championships left behind before the ten rounds in Norway. It was the home team Thyra who had finished with an 11.4 average at the Norwegian Outdoor Nationals, where Agera and Norgyx battled for the upper hand on the AAA Class leaderboard. Thyra finished in 4th place behind Grumsen who would then compete at the outdoor world cup in 4-way Open, together with Agera.

The Thyra training in the four weeks between national championship and world cup was enough to lift the scoring level from 11.4 in July to 13.0 a month later at Skydive Voss, where the competition draw was anything but easier. The NSL News reported the historic ten sequences with the update from the competition site on August 21st.

European bronze medals: Thyra after Round 10
Agera and Grumsen both finished significantly below their meet averages at the national championship in July, while Thyra lifted their performance level with a similar margin upwards. The progression of the young Norwegian team to the 13-average level could have come by surprise for the 4-way Women opponents at Skydive Voss.

The three teams in the medal positions of the world cup did not have to be concerned with the progression of the Norwegian team in 4-way Women. XPG4 (United States), Nephtys (France) and Meltemi Oceanside (Germany) were already too far ahead of Thyra before their arrival at Skydive Voss.

The other four teams on the 4-way Women leaderboard had every reason to expect the Norwegian team on a very similar level that the last NSL Power Rankings were showing on July 13th. It was a promising situation behind the world cup medal winners, and the competition was eventually even more exciting than it could be expected.

China had canceled the participation, which probably opened up the bronze medal position for Germany, while it would not change the situation on the 4-way Women leaderboard of the 15th FAI European Formation Skydiving Championship.

U.S. team SNE Fly Girls could neither win a European medal in 4-way Women, and only one of the two British 4-way teams would be a candidate for the European leaderboard. NFTO were the reigning national team and the reigning world champions in 4-way Women and competed for the British delegation at the world cup, while Alola represented Great Britain on the European leaderboard. France and Germany were secure to take the gold and silver medals, while Alola and Thyra would be in contention for the European bronze medals. SNE Fly Girls and Alola had the second duel in 4-way Women to stay away from the bottom of the 7-team leaderboard, which turned out to become an exciting 2-point battle, as well. Alola even challenged NFTO throughout the ten rounds and lost the internal British duel in the fastest sequence of the meet.

Thyra could not keep up with NFTO's strength and experience with a fast sequence. However, the Norwegian home team compensated very well for the 4-point loss in Round 6. In fact, Thyra did not give away any other round to the two 4-way Women world champions with their new lineup.

It was a very exciting finish for Thyra, as they won the next FAI medals for Norway in horizontal Formation Skydiving competition. DeLand Norgies, Norgie Girls and Polaris had brought home the earlier sets of FAI medals mnay years ago. Meet director Carl-Erik Tuv was in the DeLand Norgies lineup, who is also Thyra member Christiane Wilhelmine Sørfjord Tuv's father. DeLand Norgies member and Carl-Erik Tuv's team mate Pal Kolbenstvedt was coaching Thyra and shared the excitement and joy after Round 10.
