Did You Know...

... that Echochamber will be back in Slovakia?

Dominating until 2016: Gryttjom Volo
posted Jan 14th, 2023 - The NSL News reported on 28 November 2022 that the Swedish team's original lineup was back in action and won the national indoor championships. The performance with a 25.1 average and the atmosphere were so inspiring that the original Echochamber members began thinking about the near team future shortly after.

Result of the Echochamber reunion aftermath were new plans for upcoming events. Echochamber will represent Sweden once again at the FAI Indoor World Championships 2023 in Slovakia, and there is even a chance that they may add the FAI Outdoor World Cup 2023 in Norway to the team schedule.

The original lineup has been Echochamber's most successful one since Martin Bäcklin, Johan Edvall, Ulf Liljenbäck and Rikard Rodensjö launched their own team project to dethrone Gryttjom Volo, the home team of Sweden's major skydiving center, who dominated 4-way competition since 2013.

Echochamber coach and team member Mattias Nord, Sweden's most experienced 4-way competitor, trained and competed with Gryttjom Volo when Echochamber launched the new team project in 2016 with the same lineup that won the national indoor championship in November 2022.

Best indoor world championship placement in Montreal 2017
Volo and Echochamber faced each other three times directly, and Volo discontinued undefeated after the last duel at the FAI Indoor World Cup 2016. Echochamber have represented Sweden at all FAI indoor and outdoor world cups and world championships ever since.

Mattias Nord transitioned from Gryttjom Volo to Echochamber first as the team coach and alternate only. Then he took the outdoor slot for Martin Bäcklin who could only continue with indoor training and competition, and finally the indoor slot, as well.

Eventually, the second original member Johan Edvall stepped back, and only Ulf Liljenbäck and Rikard Rodensjö represented the original lineup of 2016. It seemed like Echochamber slowly came to the end of the team project, and the low performance and scoring level at the FAI Outdoor World Championship 2022 did not promise a quick recovery.

Then the surprising reunion of the original lineup at the national indoor championship in November 2022 changed the whole situation. The performance level was lifted back to the times when Mattias Nord had replaced Martin Bäcklin.

Echochamber at the FAI European Indoor Championship 2018
Bach together in November 2022: Original Echochamber lineup
The original Echochamber lineup was not back right away to their own indoor level of 2018/2019, when they posted their highest meet averages in team history, while it was a starting point in the right direction. At least, the event initiated new Echochamber plans for the near future.

Echochamber decided in a team meeting at the end of last year that they will represent Sweden again at the upcoming indoor world championship in Slovakia, and three original team members (Johan Edvall, Ulf Liljenbäck, Rikard Rodensjö) will be back in action.

Martin Bäcklin will not be available for the trip to Slovakia, while Johan Edvall continues with Echochamber. However, Johan Edvall, Ulf Liljenbäck and Rikard Rodensjö reactivated Mattias Nord for a comeback of the same lineup that trained and competed together in 2018, 2019 and 2020 when Martin Bäcklin was not available.

That's the same lineup that placed 5th twice at the FAI events of 2018, first at the outdoor world championship in Australia, then at the indoor world cup in Bahrain. The tied 6th place at the FAI Indoor World Championship 2017 is the best indoor placement for a Swedish team so far, with Echochamber's original lineup. The lineup with Mattias Nord in Slovakia will try to at least copy the placements of 2018.
